I just replaced an old 2 gal. galvanized double wall fount waterer. After washing it out I filled it up, and noticed that with the outer top off of it water leaks from the tank into the drinking tray, through the seam down at the bottom. Without putting the top on it would eventually just...
I'm in Southern California. I think the lowest it got here was 47F, and that was only a couple of times while that hen was sick... could frostbite be possible?
One of my hens was really sick last month. I was thinking it was coccidiosis and treated her for that, now she's better. While sick half of her comb turned jet black... I mean like India ink. She's back to normal now except her comb hasn't recovered. Now here's the weird part - the black...
Chapter II - Sick chicken, the sequel
That sick hen got worse and worse. I figured it was either coccidiosis, which is curable, or internal laying which is not. So I kept trying to get her to drink the Corid mix, shooting it into her mouth with a syringe when she wouldn't do it herself. She...
Update - things don't look good. I think it was Monday I started my hen on Corid. I got her to drink a little each day and she stayed the same all week. No improvement or decline. I had to go away yesterday morning until tonight, and when I got back the first thing I did was check on her...
Since reading your reply I've done some reading on cocci. You're right, it sounds like that's what ails her. Thanks for the info, I got some Corid today and managed to get her to take a few drinks of the dilution. Fingers crossed.
She does eat and drink, but not as aggressively as normal. And as for her poop, it seems like much less. Normally the majority of it is under the roost, but now that she's sleeping on the ground it's hard to quantify it. While I was examining her this morning she let some go, runny and green.
I have 2 red sex-links, age unknown but I was told they're from the same 'litter', hence the same age. Last year they both stopped laying for a while, among other things there was a bout of fowl pox. One started back up but the other never did... it's been about a year since she laid an egg...
I have a shelf under my hens' roost, and lay cardboard on it for easy cleanup. Along with the poop I find a lot of flaky stuff... originally I thought it might be a by-product of molting, but nobody is molting now. Here is a picture of what shows up under the roost.
I've read some...
I have 2 red sex-links and today the comb on one of them suddenly looks awful. It's not upright, kind of lays over to the side, and has a nasty looking skin disease on it. It's actually much worse looking than the pic below... please share any advice on this. Thanks.
18 months ago I was given 2 full grown hens, Red Sex Links. Using this forum I quickly came up to speed on being a chicken owner and all last year got an egg per day from each hen, with a day off about every week and a half. Then in winter, there were feathers all over the yard but only one of...
That sounds good, I'll look into it. But to my original question, do you more experienced folks think their familiar but smaller coop would be better for a few days that a bigger, unfamiliar environment?
Thanks
Hi...
I'm preparing to go away for 3 nights. Usually I'll have someone come and let my 2 hens out in the morning, lock them up at night but this time no one is available. Their coop is about 4.5' x 3' and about 4' high, with a roost high up. They are used to going out every day into a fenced...
Hi,
I found this girl (guy?) in an isolated industrial warehouse complex on Sunday. Anyone recognize the breed/ gender? Will it lay eggs? It seems like it's lived around people, it came to me when I called it.
Thanks
