Regarding the SLW issue.
It's been my experience that the lowest hen on the pecking order is smaller than the rest. Usually it's no more than a pound in difference. If she's eating well and doesn't appear to be ill otherwise, I wouldn't worry too much.
I'm here in Canadys, SC which is just outside Walterboro. We consider ourselves from Walterboro though since we have to go there for groceries, gas, and everything else we need. We've got a bunch of chickens, 2 dogs, a kitty, and 4 children.
Negotiate!! Most butchers are willing to deal if it's in bulk. $2 is average around me, so $3 is a bit outrageous unless you are doing only one bird. If you are doing several, ask if they would be willing to go lower. You can also contact other farmers in the area, many will offer butchering...
My 7 year old daughter has seen the pic and suggested that you name the one on the right Waffle. She is still thinking about the one on the left HAHA, I will let you know what she comes up with.
That is a good size for 4 dressed Cornish. The first time is the toughest on the soul, after that it's all easy going. It's worth it for the health benefits and taste
Awesome site. I came across one today that had me confused and laughing. I was searching for quail eggs and came across this cooking tool( I think ) Anyway read the description and try not to laugh too hard...
Thank goodness he's ok and the house is fine. After my 10 year old put a hot dog in there for 10 minutes instead of 1 minute I got a new microwave. I got the kind that you can put metal in and it senses when the food is done and shuts itself off. Whirlpool makes them. Now I don't have to worry...
I would highly recommend Black Sex Links. They are an extremely docile breed and hearty. They thrive in cold or heat and lay nice large brown eggs. I have 16 of these ladies and they think they are part of the family. Whenever my kids are outside playing they are right there next to them. They...
What kind of relationship is it when you need to have permission for everything. As long as it's not directly affecting her, and it's less than or equal to what you had in the first place, I don't see an issue. I would mention it to her and let her know what your plan is, but make it as a...
I think it's a matter of personal taste. I've been raising chickens for six years now and I have no 'poop board'. I just have a piece of old linolium tacked under the roost and it hoses off easy enough.
I normally put mine in at 6 weeks, but it really depends on the breed. My giants have been able to go as early as 4 weeks. When they are able to feed well and are active and feathered out well you can put them out there. Keep them away from your roos for a bit longer though, some can be...
He's definitely a roo, gorgeous and healthy, it's a shame you will have to give him up. I have 4 roos and some are just not as aggressive with the ladies as others. Just like people, some guys like the ladies to make the moves. As far as crowing, I have one that doesn't crow much at all, but...
