You could provide a heat lamp, if you are concerned. It wouldn't have to be a very super high wattage bulb. Just enough for them to take the chill off if it falls to 20's a night. By week 7...
We ended up with 15 chicks. I'm thinking only 3 are roos but I know I can't be that lucky! I read that Buckeye roos have longer darker wings and tails, so that's what I'm judging by.
Here's the whole crew. Notice some of them are really light...like yellow Are those really even Bucks...
Well, we ended up with a total of 16 chicks out of 34 eggs. Not bad for beginners with a few small issues along the way! We did lose one chick...I think he didn't absorb his yolk??? Anyways, the others are a week and a day, and almost 2 weeks. They're growing like crazy and have gotten SO...
Our second batch started hatching a day early and Saturday night we had 2 chicks. We're up to a total of 5 from the first batch (there was a 6th born with a protrusion from his butt and we lost him) and 7 from the newest with a few more new pips still
Just wanted to update that we have 5 chicks and one last one trying to zip!!! Our next hatch should be Mother's Day...I'll let you all know what we end up with
A few questions I can't seem to find the answers to using the search function...
We're putting the chicks in a giant Rubbermaid Tote until they get a little bigger. Can we put newspaper on the bottom and cover it with the shavings? I've read somewhere (and can't find it now) that you...
We ended up candling all of the second batch. I have I think 8 that are bad (never developed). 3 I definately saw movement and then the rest developed but I didnt see any movement in those.
As for the batch due today....I heard chirping an we have at least one pip!!! Woohoo!
That's crazy...I've read a few times on here people having eggs pip and hatch at 28 days! What temp are you running at? I've also read that if the temp is slightly low they'll be slow to hatch too...good luck!
Well, today's D day. No pips and I'm not seeing any movement at all. Gonna wait it out a few extra days since their temps were low for the first few days

Yeah, he thinks he saw rocking (but he's crazy, so who knows! LMBO) It was a few days ago, and it was the Sunday batch of 20.
If we candled the Sunday batch right now, it wouldn't show much right? I assume it would be almost completely black IF there were chicks?
