I don't think my guineas have any sense at all to not to have eggs and keets in the winter! And I have learned that I am a better mommy than they are. For a while, the birds were sitting on the newborn keets when they were making them run MILES a day through our fields in the cold...and they...

    I have "grand-keet" !

I am so thrilled.....after starting with 17 guinea keets to have them dwindle down to just two after a year (mostly hawk attacks and foxes), my 2 smarty pants have become natural parents. ( I call them smarty pants--since they are certainly survivors!) They won't let me get very close to the 1...

Don't worry too much about the cold weather---my dudes survived just fine this past winter and it was zero for several days in a row---BUT, I made sure they had unfrozen water---I used one of those heaters for water dishes for dogs. AND--they did fine in several feet of snow too---ducked under...

I gave them the sprigs of it---mainly to play with--after their second week. It is "rich" stuff though--so don't give them a lot. Think rich chocolate fudge candy--don't overdo it. I use chick starter for the first year, but they like a fancy mix of bird seed best after about 9 months to...

My guys only liked millet treats until they were about 6 months old--then they started ignoring it......but they love sunflower seeds. The trick is to see that they are getting the protein they need, which is why the millet. Good luck!

My loss to foxes and Cooper Hawks actually happened during the day...I do pen them up at night, not that they cooperate all the time about going in. My food isn't really a treat when they've have bugs all day.....a challenge I am still working on.

I'm afraid that they are fearless, and do go in the road...and I've lost 3 out of 17 to the road. Most of the time our neighbors will stop for them, but we have tourists coming to the beach that drive too fast, and couldn't care less. BUT--I do love the little dickens, and started 17 more this...

Coop Builders - What would you have changed or done differently?

Absolutely love this! Congrats on your great catch (your hubby)!

Yes!! They definitely can fly---hard to believe, but they can go a good 30 ft up into a tree. They don't like to fly a long distance, but once they are adults, they will fly to get away from predators or rush across a road! I have found that they are hard to control that way, so start training...

Coop Builders - What would you have changed or done differently?

Are the rats trying to eat the chickens--or just their food? I have a terrible fox problem, so I've had partial wooden flooring in my coop...I am still trying everything I can think of, or read here, to keep them safe.

    newspaper for day old chicks?

I did find that on my limited budget, the kraft paper roll from hardware store was the super "cheepest". I do like the puppy pad idea though---but seems pricey. Just my thoughts.

    newspaper for day old chicks?

I use brown kraft paper. I get it at the big box hardware store in rolls in the paint section. I also use a wooden towel bar that I bought there for them to hop up on.....works great! I've done guineas, buff orpingtons, and bantams this way. Clean up is easy!

Congrats on getting keets! They are so much fun--and really not a lot of work once they are feathered out. I kept my keets for a month in a huge bathtub size plastic tub with a heat lamp inside. Towards the end I would take out during the day in a brooder box--almost like conditioning them to...

I just love my guineas! I got hooked on them when my neighbor had a bunch, and one of them adopted us. We called her Henrietta--but she finally was caught by one of the many foxes around here. So last year I started 17 of them at 48hrs old. We still have 6 now--full grown. Even though we have...
