Which breed of chicken is at the top of your flock (pecking order)

My black Austrolorp, Caiman, is the queen of the flock. The Barred Rock, Mercedes, comes in a close second.

    A new twist for protien...

We put a bug zapper in our run, too. We did it to cut down on the flies, which worked. We don't even turn it on very often now. I didn't think about using it to attract bugs at night. Might give it a try.

Need to know if this is a rooster

Just wanted to add an update--he is definitely a rooster--crowing up a storm. A friend of mine came to get him two days ago. He'll have a nice flock to lord over out in the country.

    unexpected chicken death

So sorry for you. I found one of my chickens dead this morning, too. Zelda was perfectly fine yesterday. She was following me around the yard like a puppy dog. She was about 5 1/2 months old and has been laying eggs for about 2 weeks now (laying an egg almost every day). She was on the...

Thanks for the welcomes. I'm sure many people do this, but we keep improving the coop and run. We installed a box fan in the coop (blowing outward) to give a little more ventilation. Recently, we built a little roof section over the area where we keep their feed in the run. It doesn't rain...

    Dogs?

I have two dogs. We already had Coco when we got the chicks. We acclimated her to the chicks from the beginning. We showed them to her and played with them and let her see they were our pets. We encouraged her to protect them. When we first put them outside in a small pen, we taught her to...

Need to know if this is a rooster

Yes, he is beautiful. I hate to get rid of him, but the law is the law! I have friend in the country who will be happy to take him. I need to give her a call!

I've got ten chickens and have been perusing this site since I got them. I've learned so much here! Four chicks are about 22 weeks old. My Austorlorp and one RIR are laying (for about a week now). I have another RIR and Buff Orpington who haven't started laying yet. I have six others that...

Need to know if this is a rooster

Thanks! I was afraid of that. I got them from Tractor Supply and they were supposed to be pullets. I have another one that's probably also a roo, but is a little smaller. The third of the group is definitely a girl! I have ten chickens altogether and the two of the 22-week old ones are...

Need to know if this is a rooster

I live in a town with an ordinance prohibiting roosters, so I need to know if this one needs to be adopted out! It is about 16 weeks old, and suddenly got as big as my chicks that are about 22 weeks. It has also been pretty dominant since day one.
