This video step by step is amazing. I also tracked down the woman in the video and had a phone call with her to talk me through what to do if it didn’t work the first time. She was so supportive.
I successfully treated a slipped tendon in a 4 day old chick last year. Hobbles is now thriving alongside her two sisters at our school. She hatched from a school hatch project and had a splayed leg/curled toes and a slipped tendon on the other. It was the most exhausting week of trial and error...
Help needed!
I came in this morning to clean out our school chicks (5 and a half weeks old) and Hobbles has got a toe that’s bent sideways. Definitely only noticed today. She’s walking on the leg fine and it doesn’t seem to be bothering her but I’m worried that she’s maybe landed on it funny...
We are unable to keep any roosters (too many neighbours). The woman who took the rest of the chicks after incubating is willing to take any roosters still remaining. So I’d rather the roos get to go back to her flock of chicks sooner rather than later (especially if it’s only one rooster going...
Is there anyway to find out? Would a chicken vet be able to gender them? I’d rather not leave any roosters with us for another three weeks if they can go earlier to reintegrate into the flock x
Hi all,
As title suggests… we have three chicks that are 4 weeks old and I’m wondering if there is a way to figure out gender based on how they’re maturing/observing their looks?
(Short backstory)
They’re from a school hatch and I kept them as one was injured and needed hand-rearing but I...
I diluted as per instructions a poultry vitamin from the feed store. I used a pipette several times a day for the full five days that he was unable to eat or drink independently along with mashed chick crumb with water until he started pecking food independently. Then he started drinking...
I’ve attached a video of our chicks. Hobbles is the smaller yellow one. Treated last weekend for splayed leg, curled toe, slipped tendon. A miracle that she/he’s walking.
Up and eating/drinking regularly (from what I can see). Poops are a little on the light brown/softer side… when compared to...
How do I give him part of a tablet? Would I need to dissolve it in water?
I don’t have any to hand but I do have a liquid poultry vitamin that you dilute in water… it says to use 5 days a month so I’ve stopped using it. Could I use that and pipette him some extra water? It has all vitamins...
Hobbles is now a week and two days. He’s a fair bit behind the other two chicks in size but has definitely plumped up over the last three days since he started walking and accessing food and water independently.
Our worry is today we noticed he’s sitting down a lot. Or at least what feels like...
I’ve posted a fair bit over the weekend about our hatch project chick who couldn’t walk.
We *think* we’ve fixed the slipped tendon and as if by a miracle, Hobbles started standing this morning and is now walking! A little wobbly as to be expected after 5 days of being unable to stand or move...
This is purely because he’s now noticeably smaller than the others and a few people gave me advice that it took about 3 weeks before their chicks caught up in size and weight. I don’t want to rush him back in the hutch with the others before Thursday where he’ll likely get...
We’re on a bit of a time crunch before the remaining chicks are taking to a woman who’s keeping them on her land but she won’t take one that’s ‘poorly’.
He’s in a smaller cardboard box with stable ground (kitchen towel and a tea towel on top of that) with scattered chick crumb and also a...
I’ve posted over the weekend about a 5 day old chick who we thought had splayed legs but turns out he had a slipped tendon. He hasn’t been able to walk since he was a day old.
We’ve splinted him and kept him upright for 48 hours. We left him out in a box with heater and food and cuddly teddies...
