We scared it off. We are quite a ways away from the woods surrounded by wide open fields. We see prints around in the fields from the night when the chickens are locked up safe but nothing usually makes the trek during the daylight hours. He must’ve just been hungry. He wasn’t all scrawny and...
Birds were out in the sunshine today despite the cold. They ran in pretty quick when a coyote appeared mid afternoon. Apparently all the little snacks in the forest were hiding from the cold too. Eggs froze quick this morning!
I only have chickens but will say I’ve tried a few brands available and Poulin is my favorite for layer pellets (firm dark yolks) and meat bird crumbles.
There is quite a few for sale on Craigslist you could check out. There’s does and bucks and a few family units and a couple whole herds depending on what you’re looking for.
Thank you!! We are so hoping for pullet. It’s my three year old daughters third try for picking a chick that’s not a rooster. She’s very excited you all think female! I was getting nervous because the coloring is so pretty and it seems like the pretty ones are always cockerels…
Got this chicken from Hoovers hatchery in the colored egg layers assortment. I’m assuming it’s crossed with a legbar because of the crest. Tiny comb and not much reddening. The pics make its face look super red but it’s just wonky lighting. Very skiddish. What do you think?
That looks like it would be so cozy all tucked in with snow! Do you have any condensation issues? Last year I had a metal roof on the run and the northern side wrapped and condensation was dripping off and freezing on the roof. But because the other sides weren’t wrapped there was snow drifting...
I was so hoping for a different response. Lucy the boy may become a garden rooster and help me turn over the raised beds. If she/he stays nice and doesn’t crow. Of the original six sexed pullets, this is cockerel number four! :barnie The other three crowed and were not nice and have been...
So we have this chicken. Kids named her Lucy and got attached, and then she started having issues with crop impaction/pendulous crop. She’s the sweetest chicken, first to run to greet you and lets us pat and hold her and follows me around. We decided to let her live out her days knowing they...
First time chicken owner. These girls (guys?) are about 19ish weeks old. No eggs and no squatting yet. Bought at about 8 weeks as “copper marans and Americanas”. Black one is and always has been the top bird, white one loves to try to challenge that. I was thinking the reddening in their combs...
