    paralyzed rooster?

He died a week later, then a old hen went down with the same symptoms a week later. None of the other 25 had any issue since. I was worried about Marek, but there was no contagion and no new birds were introduced in the flock. I wonder if they could have eaten something poisonous, like...

    paralyzed rooster?

Ten days ago my main New Hampshire Red rooster suddenly showed signed of weakness in the legs; within a day he could not walk and he was sitting on the floor, unable to walk. He cannot perch, so am keeping him in a separate large cage, within the coop protected from the other younger rooster and...

Thank you for the comment. The brooder is in a building semi-open, warm during the day and sheltered from the wind. I am in a sub-tropical area (New Zealand). The worse we get in the depth of winter (2 months) is 2C in the open, more commonly not lower than 5C. It is probably a few degrees more...

    Ceramic Heater

Thank you for your comment, I know it is very small. I unexpectedly got a high success rate in the incubator this time round. I have put a piece of thick fabric over the heater from Day 1. It is the beginning of autumn here so not too bad for temperature at night. The coop has been done for a...

    Ceramic Heater

This is a copy of the question I have asked on probably the wrong place: Planning to purchase an Infrared Ceramic Emitter Heat Bulb as a backup for my heat plate. What power do you think I should aim for? I had 50w or 75w in mind, but not sure what to aim for. This is my setting: I built...

    Old Hen

Sadly, she has died suddenly 2 weeks ago, at the grand age of 14. A sudden spasm, a flap of wings and it was over. Hard for my daughter who had her as a pet from age 3 1/2, but she is getting over it.

How do I stop my almost-pullets from jumping on my head?

It is natural behaviour. We often had chicks hiding in the neck feathers of our breeding hen. But the idea of the hat is good.

    Old Hen

Recently she has started to shake her head side fast to side several times per minute. Any idea what could cause this? Thanks
