Converting a garden shed to a coop

Mark 2 roosting bars Much better Though I am concerned about the 2 levels, as I've heard this can cause fights. We'll see how it goes. I am going to need another roosting arrangement as my littlest feathery kids are growing so fast!

Converting a garden shed to a coop

Chicken Run – Build Montage! First there was a plan – a super basic plan And more planning And a bit more. For all the planning…. I mostly just “winged it”. I started by marking out the positions of the 240cm star pickets, 90cm apart. I pounded them into the ground with a sledge hammer...

Converting a garden shed to a coop

Chicken Coop– Construction Montage! The first step was to clear out the garden shed and give it a good clean. Outside – including removing the glass louvered window, but leaving the frame in place (this became really darn important later!) And Inside. I wiped down the interior walls and washed...

Converting a garden shed to a coop

This is my design for the coop and the extra stuff I ordered. This only shows 3 out of 4 walls. I drew the forth wall up with the plan/blue prints last night and promptly forgot to snap a picture of it. This also doesn't show the run - which will be attached on the left hand side, where the...

Converting a garden shed to a coop

Yes! Ventilation! There will be a bunch of ventilation holes/windows and, before summer hits, I'll be putting a whirly bird in the roof.

Converting a garden shed to a coop

I have some new chickens! 4 babies, sexed female, from a commercial hatchery. Got them as day olds and they 6 weeks old. My current coop is 12 months old. It is a small commercial coop/tractor that moves around my yard. It currently houses 1x 1 yr old Buff Orpington and 2x 6 month old ISA...

Do people lie about how many eggs they get??

I have 3 hens- 1 year old buff Orp and 2 ISA browns 6months. I’m getting at least 2 eggs every day. I get between 12-18 eggs a week. I say I get an egg from each of my ladies almost every day. I’m in Australia and in Autumn. The other factor - maybe people are from other parts of the world -...

    Chooksicles

It’s been horribly hot here - 33-43°C (91-110°F). To help out my fluffy butt chickens, I’ve made some frozen treat blocks for them. Oats, pepitas, sunflower seeds, egg, linseed, green peas. Frozen in silicon muffin liners. Chooks LOVE them

    First Eggs!

I got my first egg! Followed quickly by another the next day. I was told to expect weird shapes, sizes and colours but these 2 are perfect! So proud of my 2 clever ladies

    Pirate ducklings with chicken mama!

I am enthralled! I think I'm almost as invested in this duckling-under-a-chicken hatch as you are! Can't wait to see the little fuzz butts.

Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

Has anyone used Barter & Sons hatchery? I am looking into getting some new day-old chicks in spring and this company have a 90% success rate of sexing day olds. They only sell "production" birds - Red, Black and White, but I'm not after show birds, just pets and a few eggs. I'm leaning toward...

Descent into Chook Madness (pic heavy)

And then there were 2. Magenta and Violet the roosters were surrendered. Little Lilac finally succumbed to whatever has been ailing her. We lost her on Thursday. Now we just have Indigo and Amethyst. Until spring when we’ll do the “hand raise chooks” thing again

    Wyandotte Runt?

Little Lilac passed away some time over night. I had to leave for work early so my daughters went out to check on them, make sure they had food and water and Lilac was laying dead under the perches. My kids are devastated, especially my youngest as Lilac was her favourite.

    Chicken names

We decided to name our chickens colours. Each "batch" of chicks that we raise will be different colours. First batch, I chose purple names because purple is my favourite colour - so we have Magenta, Lilac, Amethyst and the twins Indigo and Violet. Orange/Yellow names - Saffron, Goldy, Sunshine...
