    Exchequer: What is It?

Great picture of a nice looking pullet! I have a silkied serama hen that is darker but still seems like an exchequer pattern. She is an excellent mother and is my current avatar picture shown with a chick under her wing.

Introduction and my woolly little miniature mutts ‘Serama’

I have the white silkied serama over the gen 3 splits that are soft edged but mostly flat. Their feathers break easily. I lost the loner gen 4 chick but it was a silkied feathered w muffs and a beard but I have 14 more (7in each mrinsea mini) tiny blue-green eggs due 1/5 and 1/16!!

Introduction and my woolly little miniature mutts ‘Serama’

The actual silkies I have had years ago were just hatchery stock but regardless of their color, gen 2 and onward were always all black, non-silkied and flighty. I had one silkie that was convinced she could roost w the regular birds. She slid down the wall and tried again and again until she...

Introduction and my woolly little miniature mutts ‘Serama’

...thank you for your input, I am realizing the wooly name is already taken amd may be also confusing so I may find something totally unrelated like Fuzzy or furry to name the 'new breed' of hookless gened serama/ bantam ee mixes. I don't know if it will catch on but I had a boyhood dream of a...

Introduction and my woolly little miniature mutts ‘Serama’

I agree with your statement. I follow the large breed silkied Ameraucana thread on here and realized this is a more attainable goal. The diversity of the serama and Easter Egger make for very fun hatches as each bird is different and they grow up to be some smooth, silkied splits And some...

Introduction and my woolly little miniature mutts ‘Serama’

I am currently running two of the 7 egg Brinsea chick-makers! I am making a new breed from the woolied Serama and Easter Egger bantams. I am on Gen 4 selecting for egg color, woolly coat and friendliness in that order. I also have the White woollies as a pure strain that breed true.

    Show me your dogs!

Good morning ByC friends, this Smoky, who is currently side-eyeing the treat bag that comes after a picture taking. He's 17 ish and was a reascue/guardian angel. Beginning to wobble and has to be carried up the steps some time but a good old boy! His job when younger was to guard the birds...

    Creating a new breed

The serama have the silkie feathering in their DNA as a recessive gene so it's easy to get silkie feathers without the blue skin, extra toe and never-ending scabby legs from the pop up feathered legs. Also, my experience has been silkie×EE/amer is all black and very wild! Serama are very...

    Creating a new breed

Wonderful thread! I am on my 4th generation of a similar project. I started with silkied serama and have been working on breeding for friendliness and small size while adding the blue egg gene and the muffs and beard are so cool looking in the silkied/ wooly feathering. I have eggs in the...

    HELP! bleeding hatching duckling!!

Greetings from Colorado. It's so dry here, I have to assist most hatchlings if they don't zip with 24 hours of the pip. I found the directions on here. I just use a q tip with coconut oil and a tiny drill bit. I stop if the egg membrane starts to bleed, but it's saved many chicks and...

Things I do after thirty years with chickens

Thank you, just my homemade copy of the metal brooders with the external food tray. I use a cereal box. It is taped to the outside of the corrugated box. I tried to make the holes big enough to allow a birds head in the feed area but not the entire body. I don't like droppings in the food.

Things I do after thirty years with chickens

I've had chickens all my life and never any as calm and friendly as the serama(s). I did raise them from chicks and handled them daily but I have always done that and these are just calm and friendly. I did find new homes for 3 of the roosters that were less friendly than tiny 13 Oz 'white rabbit'
