I'm baffled here. I've got a 3 day old Light Brhama chick that is scratching at itself non stop and making quite a racket. She has scratched herself until she is bleeding on the left side of her neck.
Occasionally she will open her mouth and stretch out her neck as if to dislodge something...
I'm so sorry to hear about your experience with your hen and the surgery. I'm so glad that aspiration was an option, especially with such a low rate of survival for her. I am elated to report that this evening she has her tail up and is talking again. She is feeling SO much better.
One day at a...
We have returned from Dr. Romain's office. His diagnosis is egg peritonitis. We discussed options of euthanasia, aspiration and treating with steroids, or surgery. He gave her a 25% chance at best for surviving surgery and suggested we start by attempting aspiration and seeing what we could...
Thank you all for your well wishes. They are much appreciated. I did see the link and the photographs of Penny's surgery. I am hoping that my hen (Mona Lisa) does as well as Penny did. It will be a learning experience at the very least. When I talked to doc I asked if there wasn't a surgery they...

looking at your links and information. Should I be getting her in to the avian vet? Is it something I can treat at home? Thanks again for all your help! Pamela
No frost bite. Not sure about heart and liver failure. I will look it up to learn more. If she is in failure...will she suffer long? Is it best to euthanize?
I have a buff orpington hen, 4 1/2 years old, with a bum leg (she hatched that way, no toes on one leg). She has always done fine until about 5 days ago. I thought our single digit temperatures got to her so I brought her in. She was off balance and having trouble with her legs. It seems that...
