I have some black stars and they are great- good layers and very smart and pretty. Yes, I'm a proud chicken mama. They aren't meat birds though. They are just good layers. They are on the large side; mine are about six lbs.

It looks exactly like the chukar photo! So I think that is it, plus I live in an area where there could conceivably be chukars.
To answer other questions: yes, I am keeping him/her/it warm under a heat lamp. I have no other chicks, but I plan to see if the chick and my three-month old...

That's why I named hem/her that!
And, no the comb is not red at all.
Thanks everyone! I suspect strongly that Francis is a pullet, but I guess time will tell.

This is the unexpected chick; I was walking up to the feed store and I see a movement under a doghouse out front. I look down and this guy is staring at me. Thankfully I caught it and was able to take it home. So, can anyone tell me anything about this little one?
Thanks,
Katie
Thanks for the reassurance. I don't think she is at death's door; she seems better today. I'll keep an eye on the black patches and see if they grow. Again, I thank you.

I can't be 100% sure that the black stuff wasn't always there, but I don't recall seeing it before. It is also very diffrent from the completely red combs of my other girls. It isn't blueish, but black and won't wash off. I at first thought it could be chicken pox, but all descriptions...
Hi again,
I think I have a sick bird. She is a black star, under one year and about 6 lbs. She has been perching inside the coop most of the day for the last 2 days. She isn't injured nor has anything unusual occcured. I have seen her eating and when food is put in front of her she goes for...
She returned this morning. I have no clue where she was, but when I went out to let the girls out of the coop, she was pecking around outside, cool as a cuecumber. I hadn't been able to find her in the yard, but I'm not a chicken, so I'm sure I don't know all the hiding places. I'm just so...
One of my chickens is missing. I live in a residential area and keep the girls in my backyard, which has a 6 foot privacy fence. I have (had?) four pullets that had just started to lay eggs. Yesterday, I when I let the girls out of the coop, one of them wasnt there. I didnt worry too much...
Do you have a fence? Could your neighbors see your chickens? I am going to assume you don't want a rooster. In general, I suspect that most neighbors won't care what you do in your backyard if they can't see, hear or smell your chickens.
I have four laying hens and they make minimal noise...
I have 4 hens and a 50lb bag of food lasts me 3 months. They free-range in my backyard. It is really pretty cheap- I'm a college student so money can be tight. One thing to consider is if someone might buy a few eggs off of you to offset feed costs. If not, could you trade eggs for services...
