    Help identifying a predator

Dogs, cats, humans...all animals and all kill for fun. I have lost 4 chickens to my neighbor's fat old lab that chewed through a layer of hardware cloth and chain link fence to get to them. He looked like he was having a great time.

    round up!

You are correct, there are many dangerous chemicals, and quantity counts. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be an overabundance of information on what amounts of Roundup and other herbicides and pesticides are safe, or if they even truly are. The verdict seems to be constantly changing, I...

    round up!

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2015-03-20/who-classifies-monsanto-s-glyphosate-as-probably-carcinogenic- This info was recently released. I would think that very small quantities of Roundup would not be overly harmful but I would try to avoid it as much as possible. However if you are...

    Why is Purina feed "bad"?

Raid is a pesticide...I guess that is safe too. Permethrins and Pyrethrins are pesticides. Would you want to eat either? Have a little squirt on your hot dog to keep the flies off at your next BBQ. In all seriousness though, a big problem with ethoxyquin and other supposedly safe food...

    Why is Purina feed "bad"?

Ethoxyquin was originally registered as a pesticide. Then Monsanto thought it would be a great idea to use it as a food preservative. I completely get that http://www.epa.gov/oppsrrd1/reregistration/REDs/factsheets/0003fact.pdf

Ants found mealworm farm... Murderous disaster...

I am sorry about your mealworms. You could put a coat of petroleum jelly around your container to keep the ants off, I use it for my hummingbird feeder pole and it seems to work well. If that would be too messy for you, you might try some double-sided tape to create a barrier. Just make sure...

A way to help a fluffy hen see the world.

Thanks! Maybe I should try it again. I did try to use a small hair tie but it was scratched off in a matter of seconds. Silly girls. I am thinking the rubber band would be much better.

A way to help a fluffy hen see the world.

How cute! How did you get the bow to stay in? My girls need a trim but I don't give the best hair cuts...I would love to be able to somehow keep their crest up out of their eyes without having to cut it.

    Mysterious Egg

That is interesting. Out of my two year old girls, my Australorp was the only one that started laying before she finished her molt. She is still looking a little rough but is laying nearly everyday. Her eggs are quite obvious so I am sure they are hers. I have a couple of Easter Eggers that...

    Questions about my bad chickens!

They really do seem to be too crowded. To be comfortable, the minimum recommended amount of space is 10 square feet (length of pen x width of pen) per chicken and 4 square feet per chicken for the coop. For example, for your three girls, your coop could be 3 ft x 4 ft (12 sq ft) and your run...

    Questions about my bad chickens!

Your coop is 51.5 cubic feet, not square feet. It is only 19.05 square feet (length x width). That is just a little short of the recommended amount of space for two chickens.

Hearing tomorrow, all of our neighbors and 10 others are against our coop. Any tips?

If you are on good terms with your neighbors you might try talking to them about your plans for keeping your chickens such as how many you plan on keeping, that it is not going to smell like a commercial chicken farm because they are not going to be hundreds crammed into a little space, your...

More chickens... again (chicken math disfunction)

Chickens are addictive. I started out with 4 chicks 2 years ago, but the others at the feed store were just "oh so cute" and then we discovered Silkies ...I wanted no more than 10 hens, now I have 26, with 6 more on the way at the end of April! They really are the most rewarding pets ever...

    cat with food allergies

I think that eliminating the grains is a great start. Corn and corn products can be particularly problematic. Keep in mind that it takes two weeks to see results from a change in diet and up to six weeks for maximum results. So hang in there. I hope your kitty starts feeling better soon...

Stumped about my sick hen "Peaches"

I can see why you are stumped...Did the vet check Peaches for internal parasites?
