Well, I gave up on my integrated planter which makes me sad, and the run is smaller now but still suitable for the number of birds I plan on (4-5), but the coop and run are now walk-in, it has a vertical pop-door, and dual slide-out trays. Should the nesting boxes be lower? How high should the...

You were both on the money. What I'm hearing is that wing clipping is a deterrent at best, and that I'm better off just limiting their opportunity to escape, as well as getting them accustomed to being handled and having humans in their house. THAT tidbit persuades me to reconsider the whole...

@TalkALittle - Nothing at all. Easy enough to expand the tray though. @donrae - The nesting box side in the latest version is also a swing-out door. That should make access pretty easy, I hope. I'll likely hang the feeders/waterers based on stuff I've read here and a few other places...

All this is done in PowerPoint, believe it or not, but yes, everything is to scale (in this case, 1" = 1' in the drawing) so putting in some chickens for scale is relatively easy. (see below) - Feeders and waterers come in a myriad of shapes and sizes -- I will come up with something more...

@TalkALittle : Hrm... would you anticipate less crowding with only one roost instead? Again, this will only be for 4-5 birds in the long run, and even with only one roost, that means 9-12" per bird. @aart : I'm not sure you looked closely. Your original post mentioned several problem points...

This is a strong possibility. Right now, this house has *zero* landscaping, and a lot of bare spots on the lawn despite fertilizing. Moving the coop to these areas might just be the ticket for more productive growth, and I'm sure the chickens would enjoy the AMPLE bug supply. Good call on the...

Thanks again. Plan 2.0 addresses many of the concerns mentioned so far, including roost space, number of nest boxes, ramp door, and cleaning depth. I've also modified the language regarding fencing/aproning, because I like the idea of not having to dig trenches... For those of you who...

Thank everyone for your feedback. It's all helpful in the planning phase! A door for the floor opening is simple enough, as is the lip around to prevent litter loss. I can also add some height to allow more takeoff and landing space. My intention for the vents is to make removable covers for...

Anyone Here from Southern New Jersey?

None yet -- I've been doing my research and learning a TON since Fall, and I posted a plan for the coop I want to build in Spring. Once I have a home I'm happy with, I'll be ordering some 3-5 Barnevelder hens. I decided on Barnies because of their cold tolerance, calm demeanor, and tolerance...

    How many chickens in a run 9ft x 20ft?

10 sq ft per chicken, so a 9x20ft run is 180 sq ft, therefore no more than 18 chickens. This would also require 72 sq ft of coop space too (4 sq ft per bird), so something like 12x6.

    New and excited :)

My name is Ian, and I'm living in South Jersey. Spring 2016 is when I plan to start my flock, and I'm hoping to get a few Barnevelders. The menagerie currently contains 3 cats, 2 dogs, 2 turtles, and some fish... chickens seemed like a good next step! I've posted a plan for the coop I want...

I decided to create a coop plan that combines a bunch of great ideas I've seen strewn across the web, This is what I came up with. I plan to start building next spring, so whatever feedback I get can be incorporated. All I ask is that everyone stick to constructive/civil commentary. After...
