I have heard both ways. I have washed with just warm water and had a successful hatch. I had to wash off egg that had dried onto all the other eggs. Some people swear by each method.

The smaller, slower to feather is the rooster?
That was my guess so far too?
I think it is odd that he has yellow legs as none of my chickens have yellow legs. Genetics can be so weird.

I use the same method. Toilet paper tube, small bright flashlight with (new) batteries. The only egg of my hens that I can't see anything but the air sack is a olive green egg. Her eggs are green all the way through. I have a hen that lays lighter green eggs, and I can see a little more, but...
Here is their Dad when he was a chick..
Here he is a little older..he now has a huge triple comb and huge wattles
Any of these 4 could be the mother, I wasn't home when they hatched and dh is color blind and doesn't know what color egg shell they came from. DOH!
This hen lays olive green...
Have you ever seen anything like this?
They seem to go into a trance when I hold them, especially if it sunny out.
They look dead, especially this one, he/she really relaxes.
Weird huh?
Cat trying to look all innocent. Who me?
Inga
These chicks are a little over 3 weeks old. They are mutts, but still so cute! Just wondering if anyone has any early guesses to gender?
Same one:
Both together:
Compared to the cat(who would no doubt eat them if given the chance):
Thanks!

I think if the room is still smelly then you have another bad egg. When I have removed the bad egg the smell dissipates pretty quickly. Unless a lot of fluid leaked into the bator, that is now cooking inside there.

I have dark green eggs that I can't see anything but the air sack at the big end, that is it. I just do a sniff test on those to make sure they aren't stinky. So I would say you couldn't see anything due to egg color, dark green or brown shell?
Inga
I don't think my temps were off but I am pretty sure they hatched early because they had been sitting in a hidden nest outside for days before I found them and brought them in. Our temps have been hot, hot, hot here so pretty easy to start an egg developing.
Live and learn! I will...
nickrex98 - I did not leave them in there for 4 days! Only around 48 hours. I was just following the advice that many people post on here about leaving them in there for 48-72 hours won't hurt them.
The 3 that are alive are slowly coming around. The kiddos are ready to try again of course...
