Thanks for the help so far. Yes I am adding an apron at the bottom and using 1/2 welded wire. My main concern was if it needed an enclosed coop. I know most people go that style just was not sure as to the reason. If they can feel safe at night in open air, I would rather go this route. Def...
I am in Florida and am considering a preditor proof pen for 8 chickens that has no coop, only nesting boxes and roosting bars. I like this plan as I can get in with them, but I want them to feel safe. I live in the country and we do have some racoons. Do you think this concept is doable or...
I have a 2yr old Americuana that quit laying three weeks ago. She used to have vibrant colors on her feathers now they seem bland and bleached out. Her comb seems ok, poo seems ok, and eyes ok. She has also started to isolate herself. Spends a lot of time on her perch. If I coax her out she...
I have six 5 month old hens. The last addition was a 5 month old wellsummer. She was stressed out from her delivery from another state. I kept her separated inside the run with the other chickens until she recovered and then some. Now three weeks later she is out with the others, with no...
yes, they said she left healthy. She was in a usps chicken bird box so I dont see how she would have been introduced to anything in travel. I am pretty sure it is just stressed related. Her poo seems fine and she eats and drinks. The concern is the pale comb and inability to stand or walk...
I had a 4 month old wellsummer pullet shipped to me yesterday. She left the midwest on Monday and arrived Wed morning to Florida. I put her in her own coop. She seems to have a pale comb and can only stand about a minute at a time. I let her in her own run today and same thing. About a...
After reading about how much chickens love sprouts, I started seeding mung beans. None of my six chickens eat them at all. Tried giving them to them at three day's growth up to 7. Six different breeds as well. Not sure what the problem is..
Thanks for the reply. I will stick with it today and hopefully see all of them drinking. Will keep you posted on how it goes. They are all about six months old. Still waiting for our first egg...
I just installed the horizontal mount water nipples and am worried about the learning curb. I took their normal source of water away and let one nipple drip a few hours with a rubber band. I just went down to check on them. One hen knows to pry her beak under the push button and I saw water...
Thanks. I have an automatic door opener so they are let out at daybreak each day. I was asking as it is just more work to keep food and water in the coop. Figured if it was not needed I would eliminate that step.
I have plenty of food and water available in their run during the day. Do I also need to have food and water in their coop at night? I currently do but just wondered if it was a necessity?
That is kinda what I was thinking, but am new to having back yard chickens. Thanks so much for your fast response. If any other opinions on the silkie pipe up please:)
