I've had the quail on water nipples and switched to soda pop bottle waterers instead. The quail dripped so much of the water with the nipples that the ground below them was always wet - which greatly increased the smell. With the soda pop bottle waterers (cheap on ebay), it's a nearly dry...
First to qualify...this is from my experience and by no means expert. For the past few years, I've had anywhere from 100 to 11 (current count) quail. They've been pretty predictable, laying mostly in the late afternoon hours. For eating, I collect the eggs every day, but still use the ones...
I enjoy reading the opinions..for our family it's altogether worth it. I've never done a cost analysis but consistently read that quail are more efficient egg producers than chickens. Regardless, our coturnix quail are very interesting, hardy and curious birds - - a great addition to our farm.
Maybe check Craigslist for quail in your area. Locally, I regularly sell adult coturnix quail on Cragislist for $2.50 and always see some listed for around $4.
Wish I could construct something like that! Very well done! Having experienced racoons pulling quail legs through 1/2 inch hardware cloth floors, I agree on the use of subflooring...which is another layer of wire for our cages.
In your climate you should be fine moving the 4 week olds outside at this time of year...just provide a low wattage bulb for additional heat for a week or so should they need it...doubtful though. I'd put the 2 young hens and the pair of older quail together in the 4x3 cage for a couple of days...
It's actually a rubbery cabinet liner...available at most discount stores like DollarTree, Dollar General, etc. It's porous for humidity while affording easy clean-up afterwards.
Not sure I have the best advice...but mine has lasted about 10 years without any problems and with regular hatching. I use cabinet fabric on top of the wire screen which keeps the solid particles from falling through during the hatching and immediately afterwards. After each hatch, I brush...
If you wait to add the male, introduce them all to a new (maybe temporary) pen for a day or so and then return them together to the old pen. Even the old surroundings will seem new to the quail after having been away from it for a day or so...and they'll be more accepting and not territorial.
Welcome! I keep Texas A&M and have found that the bottle water caps work better for me with quail than the waterer nipples. With the nipples, the ground under the coop stayed wet from the overflow when quail pecked at the nipples...this resulted in stronger odors, more flies, etc. With the...
Please post the results of the testing...should be interesting findings. I've done this much less purposefully by default when only one quail has hatched. The quail seemed to like the company of me being near the brooder but it was flighty and nothing close to friendly.
Here's what we use...I've modified it since this picture to include a protective hardware cloth floor a couple of inches underneath the original floor to ward off predators. We have a couple of these...works great for about 20 quail.
