Final count is 3 chicks out of 8 eggs!
One dark grey/black
One grey with lighter points
One yellow with red points
All out of white eggs. So that leaves my two polish hens and my sumatran as potential mom egg donors.
She's still a little worried when they move but hasn't made repeated attempts to peck since those first few minutes, phew!
Update: chick two is yellow and red?!
I see the first baby!!!!! It's a grey little ball of fluff!! She keeps getting flustered at it and pecked it, is this bad? It's her first batch so is she just confused about being a mom?
When they do start to hatch will their cheeping change? Also, will I be able to see the chicks from under momma or will I have to lift her? Shes so calm I can go in without a glove and ask her to move and she'll lift for me.
Okay, this is my first hatch EVER! I have 8 eggs all sired by my EE Roo of mixed breed (polish, sumatran, barred rock, and EE) underneath my 3 year old barred rock hen. She is in a separate coop and has been set for about 20-22 days. Today I heard cheeping!! I'm freaking out because I'm home/on...
Okay I candled the eggs for both hens. I had to remove two of them from the small clutch, the other two are veining. The other batch of eight are showing air sacs and ... I think they're a lot more developed than I had originally thought!! It is very dark inside those eggs, I'm thinking they're...
My broodies never seem to stay set, until now. My Sumatran started to set on a clutch of about eight eggs. She was happy for about four days...and then my Barred Rock decided she wanted to be broody two and sat on a clutch of four eggs. The Sumatran is lower on the pecking scale, the Barred Rock...
We did have construction work around their coup last week but I doubt that would be effecting them this much. They get layer pellets, corn, and dried worms mixed with pellets as scratch during the day. Three water dispensers, and a pen that has access to a section of the woods we fenced off for...
Well they all have big red combs and little hen wattles, they even scream egg songs, I've looked all over the coup and there is no sign of eggs! At 6 months I would assume the early eggers should have at least started, maybe i'm rushing things but it seems a bit late!
There is one Egyptian...
I know Barred Rock's are reported to not go broody, and that is why they're good production hens. I have two barred rocks and upon looking in the coop today I noticed Esther was sitting in the box. She lays early in the morning, never the afternoon, so I opened the door to the garden. Usually...
I had to move one of my rooster+2hen flock to the bigger coup when we got a batch of chicks. The rooster had been beat up by the hens in the bigger coup when he was younger so we were apprehensive. I always put the new chickens in at night when they're all roosting, then wait ten or fifteen...
