    New to quail

A little background... I used to be active on this site back when I started with chickens. That was a little over 4 yrs ago. Since then...I still have chickens for eggs, but almost 2 yrs ago started raising meat rabbits. Now I have added Quail to my ‘micro farm’. We are raising for both meat and...

    Blu-Kote Warning

I raise chickens for eggs, and rabbits for meat. I realize this is an old thread, but maybe someone here will know the answer or at least where I can find the info. It's been said not to use blu kote in food animals. But it's the best thing I have found for me to use. So my question is... What...

    Easter Egger club!

Just an update: Rizo is doing great! She spent 4 days in the dog crate in the house. When I brought her in and bathed her (it was surprisingly easy to bathe a chicken!) I pulled what resembled a cats hairball out of her vent. I was made up of mostly straw After that she started doing better. I...

    Easter Egger club!

Thanks. I did some searching. I forgot the to mention the foul smell in the wet butt. Looks like it might be vent Gleet. So I am getting my dog crate cleaned up and ready for her. Then I plan in bathing her and keeping her in the house for a few days (or until better). My problem at this point...

    Easter Egger club!

Update: ok wth?! Now one of my other EE's is having an issue! She seemed fine when I let her out if the coop this morning. Now she's moving slow, her butt is soaking wet, and I just pulled what appears to be a wad of straw out of her butt! And, she looks like she has a hemoroid... I'm going to...

    Easter Egger club!

I've got a question. I'm sure the answer is somewhere on this site, but I'm hoping to get a quick answer from you guys. One of my favorite EE's, Pum'kin, appears to have not emptied her crop for at least 2 days. Now it's not swollen, just full. It's not rock hard, and it doesn't feel like mushy...

My 5 girls aren't all that thrill either. Half the run is covered in snow! But at least they have the 2' clearance under the coop where it's dry. And they are having a good 'ol time scratching and digging under there. They still "dogpile" at night so I'm not to worried about them keeping warm. I...

Sadly not much else you can do. It's sooo hard to wait though... Just keep an eye on her. For the most part this is normal. But if she starts to look uncomfortable, sluggish, and or stops eating THEN there's a problem. It'd be a good idea to read up on being "egg bound".

Was this her first egg? It's not uncommon for their first eggs to be sporadic. One of my girls laid her first eggs for 7 days straight, then nothing for nine days.

Update: the egg eating has stopped. I'm thinking now that it just happened because the girls were fighting over nesting space, and one got broke so they ate it. (I hope). I tried to alleviate the nesting issue by adding two cardboard boxes that I cut the ends out of, and filled with bedding...

    Easter Egger club!

In my attempt to alleviate the fighting over nesting space, I added two cardboard boxes that I cut the ends out of, to the other end of the coop. Apparently the girls didn't like them. They immidiatly kicked all the bedding out of them, and started laying in the corner next to them. This is a...

    Easter Egger club!

All three of my EE's were hatched July 15th, and started laying just before Christmas...so 5mo. But I have heard if some earlier or much much later. Two of them lay a pale mint green and one lays one that is only slightly bluer.

Thanks. We still plan on fixing the nesting issue. But for now, we have managed to avoid any egg loss by going out while it's still dark and gathering the ones from our Red Syar, and BR. They tend to lay about 530am. Our EE's lay between 8 and 10am.
