    It's official! I have a broody coturnix quail!!!! :D

I just candled them again, after watching some tutorials on YT anx 6 turned out infertile, I removed four more that seemed a little off (either less developed or it seemed like very fluid blood inside). She now has 12 in her nest. Even with 22 she managed to keep them warm. I put a little crate...

    It's official! I have a broody coturnix quail!!!! :D

Thanks! I thought so. I candled them at night, but the shells are too thick, and i could not see through them. I think I will move mine into the house today, and reduce the number of eggs - hope I'm lucky to leave the right ones. Perhaps I try to incubate those I take away, though don't have...

    It's official! I have a broody coturnix quail!!!! :D

Hey, how did it go for your quail? One of my Coturnix also started sitting on eggs - I was shocked as I believed they lost this instinct. I avoid any disturbance to her, but after 13 days that I stopped collecting eggs, she has 22 in her nest by now, as other hens would drop their eggs to her...

    Shivering roo

The vet said today that she'll be fine; the wound apparently looks good (though I could see the inside of her throat through it 😳) and is not infected, etc. I put her back to the coop, but in a cage so she is not attacked but still part of the flock.

Thank you for the kind words! In the meantime Toby recovered. ☺ I think it must have been molting. His plumage is now stunning. But he turned a bit of bad boy - and started picking on Lilly who started molting just after him. Yesterday Ruby, the dominating hen, joined him and attacked Lilly -...

    Shivering roo

He seems to eat and drink as usual. I have not seen him mate as often as he used to during summer. He will more often stay in the coop, but I see the rest of the flock reluctant to go out of the warm coop too. No blood or injury marks, fewer feathers here and there, many pen feathers underneath...

    Shivering roo

Toby has been molting the last two weeks, and seems weaker than usual. He's been losing feathers on the head now and here and there on the back, tail. I occasionally see him shivering as if he was cold. I insulated the coop, and it is not that cold here yet either. I give him extra boilt egg and...

Good point, thanks! I use sand that was left over after laying paving around my house. I rinse it and then bake in the oven to sanitize it, and give it to the quails for bathing. I think it's seabed sand; it smells of sea when baked (I love it! 😊) and I find tiny shells in it, so I am glad to...

Hi, I have a small coop for my quail, with a tray as the floor. Autumn is coming with colder days and nights, and the flock started molting a couple of weeks ago and stopped laying. So I have recently insulated the coop and installed light with a timer to compensate for shorter daylight and an...
