My hen hatched 5 of 8 eggs. This morning when I checked on her and the babies, she had ripped the nest apart. She is still sitting on the eggs but she has them on the patch with no straw. It is two days since the last baby hatched out, so is it time to remove the unhatched eggs? Is that her way...
I am in the process of re-enforcing coop. We just reran fence and added a more secure gate. So far I haven't lost any birds to raccoons but I know they are smart and will figure out a weak lock. Right not the coon is getting in by way of a tree by the gate, there is no removing this tree...
My birds are about 1 1/2 years, so far none of them have molted which I understand is normal, but is there an age range for them wanting to hatch babies? They are Orphingtons and have been laying for about 10 months (I think) if that helps.
Is there anything that will repell raccoons? I have a big one that gets in the coop at night, He ripped though a trap I had set out and now he won't go in any trap I have.
My birds were sick a while back, I got them all through it. One of my original birds (6 chicks raised by me) was never quite right afterwards. I think she had brain damage from the really high fever she ran while she was sick and in quarantine. I was keeping an eye on her and trying to figure...
It is just weird to know there are people who don't know how to cut up a chicken, cook it.
I see frozen scrambled eggs in the grocery and I am just awed by it, how hard and how long does it take to just scramble a real one, I mean I know there are people who are in a hurry and need convenience...
A man I knew was so excited to get chickens, finally the day came. His first egg. All was wonderful until he picked it up. He refused to eat it because it wasn't clean like the "good store eggs". He gave away his chickens because some of the eggs were a bit dirty. I said if you squeezed an egg...
I agree, it annoys me when people say animals are stupid. Just because they don't speak or do the things we do doesn't make them stupid. My chickens talk to each other all the time and keep tabs on who is where.
My birds see or hear a hawk and they all run out to look at it. Yep, the big protector roo runs out calling the girls to look at the huge bird god flying overhead. Mercifully the hawks don't ever seem to look at my birds, it could be that my birds are as big as the hawks around here and were...
My birds are over a year old now and they have never molted. I thought they were supposed to at least once a year. Is it possible I missed it? Do they have to molt? They are Orphingtons.
