Possible egg bound hen, please help

My 2yr old LF Sav. Fav. hen has been sitting in the nest box for the last few days. I have another broody hen and so thought that she too was broody but when I went to check for eggs today, she was laying almost on her side and breathing heavy. She is usually a feisty girl and will bite when you...

    Hi from CO

HI there. We currently live in the San Francisco bay area but we have a house in Frederick. That's 10-20 min East of Longmont (in case you don't know ;0) I really miss CO and am hoping that one day we can go back. Although, we will have to insulate the coop. It doesn't get too cold here. I...

    Wolf kills mule

Guys, no need to go for each other's throats. Wolves are beautiful creatures. They are also dangerous predators. Like many people have said, this pack, unlike others in the area, is attacking livestock and companion animals. There is no need to kill these beautiful creatures who are actually...

    Emergancy Rooster Hert Bad

Hi Chad, Sorry to get back so late. If it is Marek's, there isn't anything that you can do but make sure that he doesn't suffer. If he seems fine now, I'd keep him separated until you are sure. If he starts showing more signs of the disease, I would put him out of his misery. It can be a painful...

    Emergancy Rooster Hert Bad

Is he vaccinated for Marek's? Mareks causes partial paralysis and can cause them to be unbalanced. It cases tumor formation in muscle tissue, nervous tissue and visceral organs. It can come up seemingly out of nowhere. Usually, the first signs are stumbling or limping (sometimes falling back on...

Opinions on dark brown egg layers?

I really like welsummers. They are great layers. I get almost an egg a day/bird from my two girls. They have had short periods of time where they did not lay if they were uncomfortable. But they are awesome girls!!

Fed my chicks Avocado...now I read it's poisonous! What do I do?

I think that the pits and skin are the most dangerous part as they contain the most toxin to chickens. As long as they haven't eaten either, I would think they should be alright. Just monitor them closely for the next 24hrs. You can try giving them activated charcoal if you are really worried...

    My last Mystery Chick

I don't think she is a barnie. They have lacing on their feathers. I don't have personal experience with buckeyes but that might be the better guess.

    coyote dragged chicken by leg

I also think you should have her on some antibiotics. Bite wounds, especially deep punctures often become infected. Her body is busy repairing itself, you want to make sure that her immune system doesn't have to fight off an infection along side healing. Poor girl, Good luck to both of you!!!

mystery illness: poor balance, weight loss, death.

I agree with the last post!!! Send the next chicken/chickens that pass to your state vet. Some states will do the necropsy free of charge and all you need to pay is shipping but it is worth it. They will give you a very detailed report. You will probly not be able to stop whatever it is now...

Brought home two ducks yesterday....a few questions

Hi Darlene, they only have their drinking water in with them for now. What I mean is, how much water will they need when they get bigger? Someone once told me that they need a pool deep enough that they are unable to touch the bottom but I worry that, if they are living with the chickens, that...

Brought home two ducks yesterday....a few questions

Hi everyone!! I am new to duck ownership. I brought home two little ducklings from the feed store which I believe are mallards. They are super cute!! The gal at the feed store told me that the males were supposed to have bigger heads and so I picked out two little babies which I hoped were a...

Tips on Scaring Away a Racoon

My great dane came face to face with a coon a while back (like four months ago) while four of them were snooping around my yard. He wouldn't do anything to the coon but it startled him and it was something new so he gave out an aggressive "woof!!" The raccoon ran backwards so fast up the fence...
