    possible prolapsed vent

I saw the oviduct inside the vent of my chicken. Completely inside, a small reddish bump. Seeing the reddish lump surprised me, so I went searching for what it was. But our chickens have been molting since about Thanksgiving, so I'm wondering, does this mean she's coming out of her molt? We saw...

Paralyzed leg - is it Marek's?

Okay, first off, I am not a vet or medical professional, nor an avian expert of any kind. From our experience and research, Marek's is basically a form of herpes that affects poultry (not communicable to humans) and "flares up" from time to time the way a cold sore does for humans. However...

Bringing in 3 new chickens to my 1 old chicken

We're increasing our flock from 1 chicken (we recently lost our 2nd to illness) to 4. I've seen a lot of articles on adding 1 chicken to an old flock, but I'm introducing possibly as many as 4 chickens who've never met to each other. One of them has lived in this coop for as long as we've had...

    Do we have Marek's?!

Thanks for the links. We were too far away to get her to a state vet in a timely fashion, and really wanted to learn about this, so we did the necropsy ourselves. It sure looks like Merak's. Her pancreas was just covered in the telltale Herpes-like tumors, her left sciatic nerve (the side...

    Do we have Marek's?!

UPDATE Poor Red passed away today. From the level of rigor mortis set in when I found her, I'm thinking it happened btwn 3 and 3:30 pm. Not sure if the heat today (early 90's) did her in. Will do necropsy to finally get to the bottom of this. Updates to follow...

    Do we have Marek's?!

Thanks! Where we have her separated is well shaded and luckily the temperature has been down in the upper seventies for the last few days. She had no appetite yesterday, but gobbled up all the food we gave her today. Our local chicken vet charges $75 just to look at the bird and then an extra...

    Do we have Marek's?!

We've been having some issues with one of our chickens, Red. I posted before about this and got a quick response but would really appreciate a couple more opinions. We've had a friend look at her who did not mention Marek's, and the flock she came from has no history of Marek's. We got her in...

Paralyzed leg - is it Marek's?

Thanks - the more we look the more she seems to have Marek's. There are some other symptoms she was having in her eggs beforehand as well, so I'm going to just throw it all up here and see what people say. Here is what Red and her eggs were displaying in the weeks leading up to this: -June...

Paralyzed leg - is it Marek's?

As a follow up, we have considered Merak's disease but her eyes do not seem to show any sign or discoloration or distortion. Red is also a bit old as she is about 18 months-2 years old (we were given our chickens as a gift, so not sure) and her other leg and wings are completely unaffected.

Paralyzed leg - is it Marek's?

For the past couple weeks my chicken, Red, has been limping. At first I thought she had leg mites (we had a case of it a few months ago but seemed to have successfully treated it). Her feet had begun turning white and her scales were strange. I had a friend who knows more than me about...
