Thanks for the info!!! I think they would be happier outside in the larger area - the brooder box we have them in is a giant Rubbermaid tote but with 6 chicks its tight:) The are constantly peeping but they aren't distressed peeps so I think they are just a little bored. we have sticks and...
We are using a medicated starter crumble and haven't given them any grit or treats. My hens eat a feed we buy from a local farmer who grows and makes everything on site so very fresh - they have been thriving on it with no issues as all. Since we are in NY it looks like spring is leaving for a...
We have 6 chicks - majority about 2-3 weeks old. I was wondering when it would be okay to move their brooder (with heat plate) outside? I am located outside of Albany NY and our temps get into low 30's at night still. Also, at what age is it good to start introducing them to our year old...
We got 6 chicks a few days ago and originally had them on newspaper with paper towel over it - they were quiet and happy. Yesterday introduce pine chips and they haven’t stopped peeping - except at night thankfully!!! They were eating them at first but have seemed to go back to their crumble. I...
Thanks for the info - we get our feed from a local farmer who makes it fresh for sale but we have been giving them some scratch and mealworms on a pretty consistent basis!!!
when I collected eggs yesterday I noticed a yolk in the pine shavings and after a closer look I found what can only be described as a rubbery broken egg shell - was like an empty water balloon? We did have other eggs with hard shells so thinking it's not necessarily diet related - any advice??
That looks like the type of chicken we are looking at - but the chicks they showed us were dark:) we are still pretty new to this but enjoying it. Thanks for your feedback!
Thanks for letting me know!! Can you tell my why you have a blanket over the heater and I am guessing it’s safe to do that?? I was looking at one that has a plastic shield on top to prevent them from going up there and another that is flat like yours
We live in northeast and temps are dropping to low 30’s high 20’s at night. Can brooder box be kept on enclosed, un-heated, sun porch if we keep a brooder heater in there. It’s the kind that the birds can get under.
