Hi All,
It's my first winter with my chickens and I've had a few instances already with frozen water in the mornings. I have 5 Easter Eggers, a 5 gallon metal fount waterer and electricity in the coop. I currently don't have anything but a lightbulb (for me to see at night) in the electricity...
Hi All, first time chicken owner here and I'm getting ready to finish framing my coop but I'm having second thoughts on the run design. The coop is 6x6 and the run is 6x8. The original design has the run attached to the coop and the roof going over the entire 14' span of coop and run. I'm...
Ok great thank you for the advice! It's a 250 watt red heat bulb with heat lamp. Being my first time, I ordered a chick brooder starter kit from My Pet Chicken. I guess it's intended for outdoor brooders. The only thermomter I have is a meat thermometer and it was reading 82 at the floor...
I got 5 baby chicks in the mail yesterday (first time chicken raiser) and have been trouble getting the temp of the brooder right. The chicks keep huddling up in a ball, but on the outside edge of the brooder not close to the heat lamp. Originally when I brought them home I had the heat lamp...
Rob I've been hearing good things about the deep litter method. When I was reading about it I thought it said you don't clean it very often since you are supposed to keep everything buried in the litter. Is that how you do it, or do you modify? Or am I missing something else on the clean the...
Coop looks awesome! Question for you, have you had any issue with a wood floor? I'm looking at building a Woods coop but I'm not sure what to do about the floor. I've seen some comments that a wood floor will start to rot and breakdown over time, but I don't know that I'll be able to do...
Here's a question for you all, is it OK to start the flock with different breeds of chickens, or is it recommended to stick with one breed at first before diving too deep? Tentitively I'm thinking 2 easter eggers and 1 new hampshire red, and 1 brahma.
great thanks! I'm going to dig deeper into the woods coop style. btw the main reason i was looking at the palace is he sells full plans and drawings, but upon further review I'm thinking functionality with lots of ventilation is needed.
thanks all! whats the prevailing thought on multiple breeds at the same time? is it better to just stick with one breed for the first go around, or would getting 2 or 3 cjicks from 2 different breeds work fine? one breed most likely being easter eggers.
Hi All, My name is Jake and I just recently moved to Baltimore County, MD. My wife and two little girls (3.5 years and 8 months) decided we want to start our own little flock in our backyard for eggs. Neither my wife or I, or our girls for that matter, have ever owned chickens or have any...
Thanks for the tip on the coop! I am building it myself and from scratch, but I have a limited skill set with building. I've made some furniture and know my way around basic woodworking, but I've never built a structure so I'm a little nervous about the complexity of building a coop. Do you...
Hi All, I just moved to Baltimore County in August and we're going to start a small backyard flock (probably 4 birds), in March. A few questions:
1. Does anyone know of a good feed store in the area?
2. Does anyone know where I can get chicks (most likely looking for Rhode Island Reds), or is...
