Deep litter/bedding on top of sand?

Ah. Exactly what I needed to hear. As we're in single digits now the sand is suuupperr cold so I was hoping bedding on top would help a little. Probably won't, but it makes me feel better?

Deep litter/bedding on top of sand?

Hey all, does anyone have experience putting Hemp bedding or deep litter for that matter on top of sand? I have sand in my coop but was going to put hemp bedding down on top of it for winter. I know sand doesn't compost so I know it won't be true deep litter, just exploring options to keep...

    Are rose hips safe?

Does anyone give their flock rose hips? We have a ton of wild rose in our area and would love to know if anyone else gives them. I hear they're loaded with vitamin c. Do they need to be cooked first? Can I forage a bunch and dehydrate/freeze? Thanks!

This whole explanation is AWESOME. I can not thank you enough. the coop is on a slight downslope so one of the posts will not be elevated... since I'm cutting a hole in the bottom of the bucket does it just stay in the ground forever?

Coop Building on a high water table

Thanks for the advice! Im using 6 x 6's because I have them on hand and was trying to avoid buying more lumber. I thought it was overkill too but then thought they might even be stronger? thoughts? I did want to treat the end that goes in the ground, think RubbrCoat 57 would do?

    Plexiglass windows for winter coop

Yes and they're pretty expensive! And a couple companies that were in my price range are sold out. If I have to spend $$ I will, just trying not to!

    Plexiglass windows for winter coop

Hi all, im in the process of an 8 x 4 coop build and am having a ton of trouble finding windows. Anyone use plexiglass for coops that have to endure cold winter temps/heavy winds/snow? My concern is if they would be strong/ warm enough. Was thinking about double pane plexiglass. Thanks in...

    Aspiring Mountain Chicken Mama

Good to know. I wasn't totally prepared for the cost of the electric fencing but if I've made the commitment to raise these girls then so be it!

    Aspiring Mountain Chicken Mama

Hey all, I've already taken so much information from these threads, so thank you! I'll be getting 6 babies come the end of April (Orpingtons, Cochins, EE's and Ameraucaunas). I live in Mammoth Lakes in the Eastern Sierra mountains. If anyone else on here has experience with rearing chickens in...
