I’m afraid the coop will be too warm for them at night and they’re so used to roosting, they’ll just bake themselves in there!
Nighttime temps during this heatwave will only fall to the 80’s.
Any good ideas for cooling the coop at night? Ice blocks in the corners? Anything? Or will they be ok?
Thank you all! I trolled around other posts and have been soaking her foot and wrapping it with drawing salve. It looks much better, swelling and redness is all but gone…but the black scab is still there.
I think I’ll just continue with the same. The less invasive, the better
Any updates? We returned home from vacation to find a hen with Bumblefoot. It could be a week that she’s had it.
I’ve ordered all supplies but am nervous about “surgery”, though her foot is pretty swollen.
How’d you do?
Can I use a water refresher additive to keep algae away?
I’m leaving for 4 days, but I’m having to wash their waterer everyday to clean off the algae. And I’m trying to avoid it, at least while I’m gone.
Any other tips to prepare them for 4 days in South Carolina are welcome! I have someone...
I’m a little late, but I have a pre-fab coop, too. And it’s in the sun in the morning with shade late in the afternoon. I live in SC and our “feels like” is expected to be 108 today.
I have a 6 inch solar exhaust fan on one wall and I leave the window open on the other wall.
I also covered the...

If Google named it, I’ve tried it. She is stubborn...
Yes. And it’s very brief and very almost under her breath. It’s not aggressive at all. I’ve turned over the barrels she likes to hide in and she doesn’t seem frantic to get back into them. She’s fine while I sit in the run with them, but if I leave then come back to check on her? BAM! Right back...
I have one doing the same thing!! I just introduced a rooster almost 3 weeks ago, though, so she might be trying to avoid him?🤷♀️. They’re in the run with access to the coop during the day, but she hides in a sideways barrel. She gives a little growl when I take her out, but then she runs...
Thank you! I kept him separated for a day. I watched how the girls warmed up to him, eventually going to the crate and checking him out. And he seemed very docile. He didn’t get riled up with them walking around him.
So I let him into the run the next day and it was like they’d known each other...
