Australia - Six states..and that funny little island.

So glad to read this. Two of mine are moulting and 1 is looking really awful, I was starting to doubt it is a moult. Also, hi! I'm in southern NSW.

How often do you clean the brooder?

I do a complete clean every 2 days and a spot clean every day. While I’m cleaning, they go in a cat carrier. They are accustomed to that now. They see me getting ready to change their bedding and they line up at the door. 4-6 of them lead the way and just confidently walk from their brooder...

One out of six of my baby chicks won't stop chirping

I’ve had 2 chicks that chirped a lot like that, 1 had deformed feet that didn’t correct with chick shoes. I think her feet were just too painful, she didn’t eat or drink enough. I took her to food and water but she got progressively weaker and died at 1 week old. The other also didn’t eat or...

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

I managed to get her to drink little sips of water that had vitamins and sugar in it. I thought she might make it. I was giving her this mixture every 30 minutes . However, she reached a point where she couldn’t control her neck and kept flipping onto her back - I haven’t seen wry neck before...

yes have tried that but she won’t yet drink or eat. She is perking up a bit as she gets warmer though. I found she has pasty butt, possibly from being too cold. I check the chicks daily and her butt was fine yesterday. I’ve cleaned her up and popped her in the incubator (dropped temp so...

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

I think I am losing one of my chicks, she has failed to thrive despite me showing her the food and water multiple times. She seems to be always cold. I have the brooder plate (Brinsea Ecoglow) set low at one end for the little chicks and high at the other end for the 3 week olds, I’ve shown...

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

I’m still a newbie as well so someone may correct me but a malpositioned chick is one whose head is at the wrong end of the egg so it won’t pip into the air cell. It can take them longer to hatch after you see the pip because they still have to absorb their yolk. Whereas chicks that pip at the...

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

2 chicks from earlier hatch with 10 chicks from this hatch. I had to get very quick photos because they are becoming adventurous and keep trying to escape when I open the pen 😆

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

My eggs weren’t shipped (they did have a half hour car ride on a bumpy road) but I’ve had several in this batch that pipped at the wrong end. All but one hatched on it’s own within 24 hours. I assisted one, she survived and seems strong. I hope yours is good and healthy :)

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

I moved yesterday’s 2 hatchlings to the brooder this morning (1 white, 1 blue). I quickly candled the remaining 7 eggs and put them into lockdown as it is at least day 18 for the youngest eggs in my staggered hatch. 1 looked like an early quitter so I pulled it out, 4 looked good, 2 are...

It does seem like she was stealing from the same hen. The chicks are all australorps. The broody hen was white with splashes of blue, rooster blue and there were other blue and black australorps in the pen so I’m hoping she stole some other colours too :)

Amazing. I initially got eggs to put under a broody but she flat out refused to move to a more appropriate nest and I accidentally broke her brood. I put those eggs in the incubator but had a low success rate (I think the humidity was too high and they drowned). My current batch are...

    MARCH 2021 HATCH-A-LONG 🌷🌸🌼

I’ve got a batch of eggs incubating that have mystery hatch dates as they were previously owned by a broody hen. I put them in the incubator 14 February. 4 hatched 24 February. 2 hatched yesterday, 1 pipped and hatched today and another has pipped today. The staggered hatch is very exciting...

    February Hatch-A-Long

I’m in the process of hatching my 2nd batch this month. First batch only 3/12 hatched and 1 of those failed to thrive and died at 1 week. The farmer I bought my eggs from gave me another 18 that he was confiscating from a broody hen. He was going to destroy them if I didn’t take them. I’ve...
