If you are having predator problems I would add at least one strand of electric wire to the bottom 18" of the outside of the coop. With small kids you can use a photo eye and or timer so it goes on only when you want it (when the children...
I agree raise the coop, but I would also suggest puttting the coop outside the run! Give the chickens more room when the reach adulthood, plus it will make it so much easier to get your eggs out when it is raised and outside the run. We used cement blocks, stacked in each corner to raise ours up...
You must look at what cover you have and the surrounding area to determine what breed will blend in with your cover. Buffs here on the farm blend into the tall field grass beautifully. that might not work if they were on manicured laws. I do notice our Orp.s when not in the tall cover...
