I'll be getting her from an old family friend who knows I'm a cow-newbie. She's a very gentle cow and rather small and he thinks she'd be a perfect family cow. He'll be a phone call away when I have questions. I read a couple of books on family cows several years ago when the bug bit...
I'll be visiting with the farmer today and finding out more about this cow. She has been hand-milked, "a little". I doubt Kenny would offer me a cow that isn't gentle. He knows I am a bovine-newbie and he is an old family friend. I don't think he wants me to get hurt!
Off to plow snow!
I have often wondered about having a family cow. We have four sons and assorted livestock but have never had a milking critter. The idea been on the back burner until 6AM this morning, when my phone rang. It was a family friend, a semi-retired dairy farmer from central Maine, calling to see...
FYI, we did go to market with frozen meat in marine coolers and had no trouble with any thawing at all. We leave home around 7:30AM and get back around 1:45PM. I am licensed to sell frozen and fresh meat from home and from coolers as a mobile vendor - two separate licenses. Fresh is a little...
Thanks! I'm planning to try the Colored Rangers next year - don't you raise those, too? I have a question about raising birds on grass - do they REALLY eat a lot of grass? My farm is almost entirely wooded and my chickens LOVE ranging in the forest. I think they like the protection from...
Anyone else here sell their birds & eggs at farmer's market? We started late last season and are now planning for next year. (Our market season runs May-October.)
I'd love to chat with someone who's "been there, done that" and would be willing to share ideas. I'm thinking of adding some...
Please tell him thank you from my family as well.
My oldest son, just turned 18, has already enlisted though he won't graduate from high school until June. (Army Reserves) He leaves for basic in early July and is signed up for MP training immediately afterward. Rumor has it his unit will...
I use Woody Pet for my chickens, turkeys and horses. Love it. I do mist it down to expand it and haven't had any trouble with anyone eating it. I do start my baby chicks on newspaper and only go to Woody Pet after they're a few weeks old.

I'd like to know more about...
Thanks. He seems to be a standard size, maybe a little on the tall side compared to pullets his age. He has blue/gray legs and pearlescent blue earlobes.
This is my "free mystery chick" rooster from a McMurray Hatchery order that hatched in July. Sadly, husband does not like roosters and I'd like to find him another home. Beautiful bird. I'd love to know what breed he is.
Why not just get the 25, raise them up to five months, pick the ones you like best and sell the rest as a starter flock to someone close by? I would bet a card at the local feed store or an ad in "Uncle Henry's" would find young hens a new home very quickly.
Wow, the subject of freezing post-processing has never come up. I'll have to check into that. The processor cannot release the birds to me until they are bagged and chilled to a certain temperature. I must maintain that temperature (ice + coolers) until I get home where they go into...
