    Down to 2 hens

I've considered that but it goes against everything I've ever read about chicken coops.

    Down to 2 hens

I use the deep litter method using wood shavings. The walls of the coop are not insulated.

    Down to 2 hens

One is a Orpington and the other is an Australorp. I live in Maryland where it gets to the 20's and teens during the winter. Obviously it gets colder but I believe that's the average.

    Down to 2 hens

So I started with 5 and over the last couple of years I've lost 3. 2 to predators, 1 to an illness. Now I have 2 and I'm worried that they won't generate enough body heat to keep warm during the winter. I was thinking about asking me neighbor how has a large flock if he would be interested in...

Adding baby chicks to existing flock... and brooder suggestions?

I have 4 adult hens that I got last spring as chicks. Started with 5, lost one, been thinking of letting my son get 3 more. Really only wanted 2 more but the place only sells a minimum of 3. Anyway, I keep reading that the adults chickens should be able to see the babies but not have access...

    After a week....

So last week I found one of my girls with a big wound on her vent area and missing feathers. Best guess was she was being picked. A week later she’s still in my make shift ER but doing a lot better. Still laying an egg a day but I’m waiting for the scab to completely heal before reintroducing...

Swollen and bloody vent area / abdomen

Just almost exactly a year old. I had 5 birds to start with and one died in some kind of attack. So we’re down to 4. They’ve been confined to the run over the winter which was never meant to be their regular run. I was free ranging them until the attack. I’m building a much larger run once the...

    Bloody chicken butt!!

I could put her in the basement if need be. Right now she’s safe in the house. She even laid an egg this morning. She still has that swollen abdomen. I don’t know what would have initiated the pecking though.

    Bloody chicken butt!!

No. The hen house is not set up to wear I can fit a crate in it. I could the run but she would have no protection from the weather.

Swollen and bloody vent area / abdomen

Well she laid an egg without any issues so she’s not egg bound and there is no prolapse. Starting to look like it’s ascites. I’ve been reading there is no cure for this, only treatments like draining? Not sure what to do at this point.

Swollen and bloody vent area / abdomen

We just got done with the Epsom salt bath which she didn’t seem to hate. She’s no longer bleeds so I guess that was from being pecked. I found another spot on her where she was pecked. Once that starts happening, do they just peck anywhere? She’s healing but her abdomen is still swollen. I can...

    Bloody chicken butt!!

So she seems to be healing. The blood is drying up etc so I guess it was the picking but what about her swollen abdomen? What could have caused this? She hasn’t laid a egg today yet but there seem to be so many possibilities for a swollen abdomen. Bad thing I’m leaving for VA for work for a...

    Bloody chicken butt!!

Thanks everyone. She’s eating and drinking just fine. Could her skin be swollen because of the constant pecking? I’ll google swollen abdomens.
