Welcome! What kinds of hens/ducklings? I have Chanteclers, Orpingtons, and Muskovys. Aren't new flocks exciting?

I grew up in Red Deer!! I'm 6hrs North of Edmonton now, but all of my family is still in your neck of the woods. I'm down a couple times a year.

Where are you from? I haven't heard of any of the cattle farmers around here having bears as an issue with their herds. The bears will get into their grain though, they love oats. I had a bear get into our compost several times this spring, but she didn't touch the rabbit in the cage 50m away...

    brooding off the grid

I know this thread is old, but I thought I would add my 2 cents. I am off grid and brooding chicks in their coop with a kerosene lantern. I have a thermometer next to the lantern and it says the temp there stays around 35C. I'm in northern Canada and we are still getting frost, but the temp...

Yes, thank you for all of your help :). I've arranged to hatch some Partridge Chantecler eggs in May. A good, hearty, Alberta made bird. They are supposed to be very cold tolerant with a pea comb. The Alaskan blog has given me more hope with my birds and some more insight. If she can...

I assume you're talking celcius with the -23 (being the Canadian thread) our winter averages -20 to -25 and dips to -40 for up to a week at a time. Based on that...heat is a good thing, yes? Well...that's one of our issues. We are off grid. We heat with either wood or propane and our power...

The dependable power source is an issue with me as well - we are on solar. In the winter we don't have a lot of sun, so there isn't any extra power to be running a power hungry item such as a heat lamp. What your Uncle is doing, butchering the flock every fall, is quite common here. I'm hoping...

Im from (roughly) Peace River, Alberta. I say roughly because it's the closest town to me and it's still 45km away. Yep - I'm in the boonies. I'd love to connect with anyone who is far north and has the long cold winters. I grew up in Central Alberta and thought I knew what winter was. Ha! I...

    Hi from Canada

Thank you for the welcomes :) I'm hoping to learn as much as I can and then hopefully help other people in cold climates like ours. There really isn't a lot of information- mostly because not a lot of people live up here. ;)

    Hi from Canada

I'm located in northern Alberta - so far north that I'm only 250miles or 400km from the North West Territories. I've been lurking on the forum for nearly a year now trying to decide what I'm going to do for my first flock. The average temperature from November until February is -25C (-13F) with...
