Iam not sure if there is a rule for this. I have 3 laying hens and I called them my flock, then i added 3 chicks and called them a seperate flock. And now that they are all together in the pen they make one flock. but they still run around as seperate flocks. Does that answer your question?
Those mid-west winters are much colder then what we have here in Washington State, but I let mine out.It rains just about everyday from mid Oct-mid May and they are ok with it. I just make sure they have some place that is dry to hang out in if they so desire. But lets be real, more worms show...

I use a mixture of wood shavings from my shop and a little extra hay for these colder months. But I live in Washington and it isnt as cold as much as it is wet.
