Thanks! I'll study up, I was really hoping it was due to atmospheric changes on his exposed eye membrane. Then I thought he survived a heart attack, or stroke. I hadn't thought of the M word. :(
Ok, I don't know what happened to my first post so I'm trying again but more to the point:
Mojo is a year and a half or so, giant cochin, I adopted him after 2 other roos attacked him.
he spent almost 3 months recovering in the house . It was determined that his eye had been plucked out. vet...
No, she is B.O and Salmon Faverole I believe, She is the only one in my mixed flock with a beard. I have everyone on a good grow, scratch with russian sunflowerseeds, green scraps and almost daily free ranging. I haven't used vitimin water since she was little, she's 6 mos. now.
Thanks for...
Thanks, I was kind of leaning that direction. She was the only one out of 5 to survive the cannibal. Incidentally, the cannibal was plucked from the earth in the form of a hawk a few days later. Hmmm chicken karma. Well whatever it is she is a welcome girl in my already odd flock :)
Chicken Little's life started out kind of rough. Not only was it a very late in the season hatch but I had a salmon faverole hen who would go into the brood box, kill and eat the chicks as they hatched.:hmm Understandably she was pretty much velcroed to the brood mama's belly for a long time...
Hi! I have 2 nesting hens, one is in the hen house, the other took up nesting in an old rabbit hutch. Last week when the eggs in the hen house started hatching (one per day) they would go completely missing by the next day. I thought for sure it was a bull snake or even a ground squirle (we...
Great info! I have a buckeye that I think is 8yrs, she started duck walking last winter, I assumed it was her age and achey toes. Thanks, I 'm glad I stumbled on this thread!
That is not a bad idea! I have 3 double sized boxes and have separated them before. They are obsessed with this particular one. Perhaps its the most successful hatching box? but they definately want to be together!
That silkie roo was named Horton sadly we lost him and the rest of that flock 2 years ago to a cougar. :( these two girls are a partidge cochin and a speckled sussex. Thanks for the reply I'll try to break them of this wierdness
Hi all! Ok this is a first for me, its been a few months since the first pair of "tag team brooders" hatched 3 chicks. A few weeks ago a 2 other hens decided that they wanted to give it a try. They decided to brood at the same time in the same box. Not that unusual in my flock, I guess, it's...
A cautiously pleasant update: Well I've learned the hard way not to name chicks too soon but today the little chick with the two mommas seems to be doing MUCH better, just a faint limp and they even went outside (sort of just to the outter most hen house door :) ) I believe her to be the buff...
Thank you, you are right, all or none. When they go to sleep tonight I will see where everyone is sleeping, if the babies are in the nest box I'll leave everyone be, I did notice this afternoon that the Roo has discovered their starter feed...
Hi all! I had two hens hatch three chicks two weeks ago. The tag teamed the brooding process and seem to continue that process with raising them. They're good moms! the chicks have done really well, although the hens haven't taken them out of the hen house yet. In prior hatches of the past I...
