Freshness makes no difference to them where the feed is concerned. I will continue to make the feed available. Would it help to scatter some instead of scratch, as well as keeping the feeder full?
My flock WILL NOT eat any commercial feed, including locally-grown, non-GMO mash. FRESHNESS AND BRAND AND PROTEIN CONTENT DO NOT MATTER, I've tried it all, so please don't suggest any of that.
At first I had the attitude that they could eat it or starve, but they were seriously losing weight in...
3 year old rh red was acting ok yesterday morning, got lethargic later in the day, then this morning wouldn't eat and hung out in the corner. By 11:30 am she was dead. Post mortem showed crop full of normal food and vegetation but lower intestines were swollen and full of blood! Never seen that...
Thank you, this is good info. I will take your advice. Only a few have the leg mites. I treated them before and most of them are ok now but a few need re-treating.
Thanks for those tips. I'll check her crop tomorrow morning. I think she is still laying because I find her in the nest box regularly. I dusted them all for mites etc when I noticed her hiding out, but that hasn't helped. I saw her poo yesterday and it was all water.
I worry about leaving them...
In another post I talked about 2 stray guineas that are harassing my flock. They belong to my landlady who won't let me dispose of them, but she won't do anything about them either. I've figured out they're both males because they're now chasing and mounting my hens and challenging my rooster as...
Well we are moving soon and we won't be taking the wild guineas with us so maybe he'll settle down then. If not he's going in the stew pot. Do old roosters get cranky? Or is it most likely the competition from the other male/s?
I guess I should ask if I get a new rooster, should I get a cockerel...
We have an older blue-laced wyandotte rooster that we inherited from someone else so we don't know his age. He came with 3 hens, also older. We integrated them with 6 Rhode Island Reds and they have all been together for about a year, so there's nothing new going on that would precipitate his...
Some of the coop is insulated with 3 to 4 inch rigid insulation and some of it is R-15 fiberglass batt.
My frozen hen was in my MIL's coop which has no formal vent at all, it just isn't very air-tight.
I placed the vent near the floor of my coop because heat rises. I figured that the chickens...
Last winter we had some extremely cold weather, like several days of -20F or lower. I opened the coop door to let my chickens out one morning and one of my hens was frozen solid on the floor. It had been about -20 Fahrenheit the night before.
So now I want to use a heat lamp on the coldest...
Last winter I had to give my chickens to my mother in law because I was moving. She has a tiny travel trailer she converted to a hen house and she had about 25 chickens in there. I thought there would be enough body heat in there to keep my hens alive but one morning I opened the door to let...
I get that Tylan is good. I do, really! But I can't seem to get it around here, at least not in a timely manner. My hen could be dead by the time I get some, so I'm looking for something I can get right now, or in the next few days, that will keep my hen's condition stable until I can get some...
