    Chickens in the garden?

Thanks - I have 6 girls and a roo, and the garden area is pretty large. They've only been getting access for a few hours a day, so there's no accumulation...

    Chickens in the garden?

I've had gardens, and I've had chickens, now I have them both at the same time! Yay! My questions is, I let the girls free-range in my garden. They've been great little weeders! How long before planting time to I stop giving them access? I will till before planting, and I'm in Zone 7, so I...

It's supposed to be 41 overnight. Should I be worried?

My eggs are pipping under broody hen...when can I bring them in?

I don't have a separate place for them in the coop. Is it safe to leave them in with the rest of the flock? I've got another broody with 9 eggs and she is nesting in the dog house so I just blocked her in with chicken wire. I bring her food and water every day because she will not leave the...

My eggs are pipping under broody hen...when can I bring them in?

I have no incubator, but a small brood pen with a heatlamp that I keep indoors. This is my first hatching...when can I bring them in? As soon as they break through the shell?

Doesmy new baby have mushy chick disease or something else?

No, this was at necropsy that I actually felt it and opened it up. I'm just hoping I didn't euthanize her too soon.

Doesmy new baby have mushy chick disease or something else?

I was wondering about the gizzard because it seemed awfully big for such a little guy..and made a lot of noise when a palpated it. When I opened it up, the pieces of grit seemed kind of large to me. I'm wondering if it was impacted. It was about the size of a marble...maybe a little bigger.

Doesmy new baby have mushy chick disease or something else?

Well, I was able to do it. I just wish I knew what was wrong with her. How large should a gizzard be in a 3-day old chick? I didn't take pictures but I did look...everything looked normal. No odor, nothing that looked out of the ordinary. Does anyone have any ideas on the strange crackling...

Thanks, everyone... Mushy chick disease is also called "navel ill"...the correct term is omphalitis

Doesmy new baby have mushy chick disease or something else?

Hi, I just acquired 6 Gold- and Silver- laced Wyandottes from a neighbor who ordered them from McMurray's. They arrived yesterday morning. Last night I was having trouble regulating the temp in my brooder, but seems to be a steady 96 degrees now. One chick out of the 6 is laying down, hardly...

    What killed my Wellie?

Thanks everyone for your input. Chooks, I'm in Graham...born and raised in Oly, tho. My covered run and enclosed coop are situated inside the much larger chain-link area, and I had not been closing the coop door at night. I definitely am now, though! When I first brought my banties in, I kept...

    What killed my Wellie?

No, something was IN the run...it's about a 300 sf area...but several huge fir trees in there, too...Easily accessible by raccoons and possums...is this what 'coons do? Kill, but not eat?

    What killed my Wellie?

Hi, new poster here. (I've been reading for months, getting lots of info and answers. I guess that makes me a Lurker?) This morning I found one of my Wellsummer hens dead in the run. (Half covered with netting, half not). It was obviously chased, I found a trail starting with a clump of tail...
