How old was your oldest chicken?

Mabel, an Easter Egger, was hatched on 05/18/12. If she makes it, she will be 14 years old. Poor old girl is not looking so good & she's got water belly that I am relieving a bit every few days. I have kept her in the house here & there over the past month, weather depending or how she...

Huge issues with latest addition to existing flock

Thanks, but I believe what you are talking about is coop area, which maybe you call a run. I have a coop & house, the house is where they sleep, the coop is where the nesting boxes are, food & water, shelter in inclement weather. They have 80 sqft there, so 10 sqft per bird. They free range...

Huge issues with latest addition to existing flock

Hi there - The issues are outside the coop as well, there is no integration happening. The babies are terrified, blood was drawn during the day. The coop is 16 x 5. The house is inside the coop, raised off the ground & is 3 x 5 - door is offset from middle on the 5' side. The nesting...

Huge issues with latest addition to existing flock

Hi there - Just a little background on what's going on. Been keeping chickens for nearly 14 years. I am on my 4th addition. I still have one chicken from the initial flock, nearly 14 years old & still going pretty strong for an old girl. She was head hen until about 3 years ago, but...

When to have an elderly hen put down?

Hi folks - I'm lost as to what I should do. Mabel will be 13 years old in 2 months. She even has gray feathers on her head. She still eats, runs for treats, roosts, etc. I'm not sure if she is in any pain, but her eyes aren't really as wide as they used to be, so it makes me wonder. She...

    Bumblefoot Surgery

Thanks. I am a bit concerned because everything I read & watched said you need to get it out, but I couldn't just keep tearing at what appears to be perfectly healthy flesh. Yeah, the scab was a bit different, but I never really tore my scabs off. It was a bit pointy in the middle where the...

    Bumblefoot Surgery

Hi there - I've had chickens for more than 10 years, had a chicken for the 1st time with Bumblefoot. Discovered Monday night. Scab was about the size of a dime, no redness or real inflammation. Vets that see chickens where I'm from are hard to find or one for sure is about 2 hours away...

10 year old "retired" hen laying again after 3 years

Wow, so I guess this does happen. I never cull my hens when they stop laying. As far as I'm concerned, they are still useful. Mine free range, so they take care of the bugs, weeds & work the compost, plus, all my hens are very tame & aren't just utilitarian to me, more like pets. I can't...

10 year old "retired" hen laying again after 3 years

I have experienced what you've explained above when a hen had been sick, but this is just way out there.

10 year old "retired" hen laying again after 3 years

The egg appears to be fine, a little smaller than she would have normally laid, but I checked the box she was in after I posted & she laid another, no blood this time. I am just shocked, this makes no sense to me at all, that's why I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this.

10 year old "retired" hen laying again after 3 years

Not sure why folks are NOT reading the entire post. She is 10 years old, stopped laying 3 years ago, at 7 years old & all of a sudden started laying again.

10 year old "retired" hen laying again after 3 years

I know they lay after 3 years, I am a seasoned chicken owner. She is 10 years old, has NOT laid in 3 years, since she was 7 years old & she just started laying again, so I am questioning if anyone else has experienced this.

10 year old "retired" hen laying again after 3 years

Hi everyone - Has anyone ever experienced a fully mature, "retired" hen, laying after not laying for 3 years? I have an Easter Egger, that was my best layer, 6 eggs every week, unless molting. About 3 years ago, she stopped laying. She virtually never prostrated herself to me (head hen) &...

    Inside brooder to outside coop

I always keep my new chicks brooder inside the house in a spare room. When they get to be pretty feathered out on warmer days, I'll take them out into a blocked off area in the main coop for a little while so they can start acclimating to the weather & the other chickens. Each day I'll have...
