Thank you. I didn't think of dog food as an option that's a good idea too. My birds are dual purpose - for both meat and eggs so I believe we can make it all work out.
Everyone is really funny and helpful too. The 3 yr. plan sounds good. Those blogs will be interesting I'm sure thanks for sharing. I don't use or go on any social media sites but I guess this is one at least for my chickens and I'm glad to have it. I am in my 40s and have never had a cell phone...
Thank you . I appreciate your advice. I hope to learn the different ways people do raise, keep, love and also slaughter their birds of different ages. This site is fun and full of great info
Staggering ages is good advice. So only getting a couple of new ones at a time over time. We do love getting eggs and meat when we can and providing more for ourselves but we all also love just as much maybe more just having the chickens too. Thank you !
I am so sorry about your pipes, may God make a way for your water and yourselves to be taken care of. Yes we will be careful not to get too many because when the laying was good there was a lot of eggs! Thanks for your advice.
Is this not normal with chicken raisers as to what I am thinking ? I thought maybe that could be a good idea but I am sure others would know better as to how to replenish the egg laying but not forever keeping the hens till natural death. I want them to have a good life but also help my family.
My hens are also my friends, I love them and they helped me through a difficult divorce and with many things the kids and I faced alone. I want to have more orpingtons for eggs and companionship but we can't afford to forever keep adding to replenish and never get rid of them or get any meat.
Is 2-3 yrs. old then too old to eat. I just thought we could get a couple of good years of laying out of them and let them have a good life before we end it. What do you suggest is the best way to replenish the egg laying but yet have meat too and be nice to the chickens ? I do appreciate...
Wow you have had and do have a lot of chickens. I really like having chickens, they are a lot smarter and sweeter than most people think. I want to keep the hens I have now - they are our first set, for the rest of their natural life. We will get more dual purpose hens though so we can can have...
I am thinking about 2 months since they have layed . We also have an Orpinton duck hen that was laying each day until she began molting for the first time. The hens would sometimes nest with her, but they usually had their own spot to lay. Did you say that the Orpintons usually live to about 8yrs?
Hello, I have Orpington hens that I LOVE but they have not layed any eggs in awhile and it seems to be more than just a winter issue. They all will be 4yrs. old on Monday, March 1st. Also how long do Orpintons generally live ? Thank you for your help !
Your ducks in the picture you have are beautiful. Thank you for replying, I welcome all the advice I can get. Hopefully the seems to be itchiness is just their feathers coming in and not anything else. You or the other person never mentioned anything about the dust to put on them if it is safe...
Thanks for replying to my question. I have not measured the temp but the ducklings are comfortable, we are using flake pine shavings, as for a bath they regularly get into their drinking water bowl, and we checked for parasites like you suggested and couldn't see any under wings vent area or...
