A bad storm blew through through Monday and our power was out for 12 hours. I decided to keep going with this batch of eggs. Candled them today and all but one seems to be developing to my untrained eye. Crossing my fingers to at least get a few chicks out of this test hatch!
Mine is running the opposite. 100 on the floor thermomter and 98 on the probe thermometer at the top. I guess I will split the difference between the two and try to relax. It's going to be a long 20 days...
I was gifted a LG with a fan and egg turner to use in my third grade classroom. Because of it's reputation for being fiddly, I decided to give it a test run at home first. (I'm also running a Brinsea Mini in the classroom.) I set a dozen eggs eggs in the LG March 15. The temperature has been...
My love for chickens has spilled over into my classroom. I have planned a egg hatching project with my 3rd grade class.
My Brinsea mini advance incubator is arriving today. The kids and I are so excited to get started and really want to set the eggs (from my own little flock) tomorrow. However...
Thanks for the great advice. The neighbor contacted me herself today. She was horrified and is going to pay for us to replace the chicks. I'm going to sit down with the kids tonight and order more chicks. They are at least comforted that they get to pick their next chicks. In the meantime we are...
Yes, dogs roam free here. My cat was their victim several years ago. We talked with the kids about learning from this experience and not letting it get the best of us. Buried paving stones and a hot wire are going up before any more birds move into our coop. I keep looking out the back window...
We moved our little flock of 14 from the garage into their run 2 weeks ago and they were doing great. I checked on them this morning and all was well. An hour later my husband called the house just after he left for work. A strange dog was walking down our driveway carrying a chicken. I ran to...
How much grit should I offer my 2 1/2 week old chicks? They are in the brooder eating mainly chick starter with the occasional treat here and there. I've been sprinkling play sand on their feeder every day or so and they go wild over it. I'm afraid if I offer it free choice they would eat the...
Got an update on the rescued chick. She is doing just fine in the neighbors' coop. She's roughly the same size and color of their silkie, so the big gals didn't single her out as too unusual. I love a happy ending.
Thanks. I'll call our neighbor this morning to check on her. If she's not doing well I she can come stay with our chicks. We are starting on our coop today... better get building fast!
What do you use to dust for mites? DE, 7 Dust, or something else?
My neighbor called this afternoon because he found a chick wandering in his horse pasture. He thought it might be a runaway from my little flock. It wasn't mine, but looked like a commercial chicken maybe 6 weeks old. All white feathers with grey legs and a very pale yellow beak. The poor little...
