How do I get my hens to stop roosting in the garage?

I can try but I have kids... Maybe I can lock the kids in the coop and let the chickens in the house. They'd probably be cleaner.

How do I get my hens to stop roosting in the garage?

My two hens that have decided they'd rather roost in the garage instead of their coop, I bought a new coop for them and locked them in it for 24 hrs to try and get them used to it but no dice. They are 100% free range most of the time. I can't just lock the garage up (kids coming in and out...

Medicated vs. Unmedicated Feed; Which do you use?

I think you are confusing vaccinating with medicated feed. Medicated feed is not truly preventative (aside from the sanitation benefits of the stool contain fewer organisms which will reduce the chance of other birds contracting the disease). It can slow down the spread and/or give infected...

Sand in the brooder -- it's worth it!

Are you sure they didn't just scatter it while playing/dusting?

Medicated vs. Unmedicated Feed; Which do you use?

It's more about ground moisture than rain. If your land has decent drainage you should be OK, the crazy temp swings you guys get are actually a good thing as far as preventing infectious diseases. They like it where it's warm and moist, especially if it's like that all the time. If your birds...

Medicated vs. Unmedicated Feed; Which do you use?

Never used medicated. I keep a very small # of birds (less than a dozen) all on 2 1/2 acres of pasture. I'd rather cull the ones prone to get sick and replace them in the next generation. If I was doing this for a profit I'd probably look at it differently but my hope is to have a very hardy...

    April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

All 8 are doing well. 3 look (somewhat) like their mama, the rest like their pops. Will be interesting to see what they look like when they are mature. Here's hoping to a better % of hens this time, I was 1 for 6 last year and according to tractor supply they were all supposed to be femaie.

8 chicks, 7 of which look totally happy. One has a bent leg so we'll see, if it's alive and otherwise healthy tomorrow I'm going to try and splint it with a bandaid. So excited. Now I need to find someone who wants their daddy so I can raise another brood next spring.

Two little fuzzballs so far, a couple more look like they are going to make it. Next time I'm getting a circulation fan.

    April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

5 days go go. My wife candled the eggs for their pre-hatch check and they look good. I'm pleasantly surprised. Taking them out of the egg mover thingy on Saturday. Fingers crossed! On a side note my sneaky (*&%^@ hen figured out she can get to my seedlings if she jumps up and down on the...

How variable are incubator temps supposed to be?

I'm trying to hatch my first set of eggs this year, I got one of the cheapish styrofoam boxes & an add on egg turner. The temps seem to be very variable - up and down by 3F or so from 99.5. This is as read on the thermometer sitting inside a plastic card that's lying on top of the eggs. Is...

    April Hatch Thread--Come Join Us!

Hi All, trying to hatch my first clutch ever. I got my first chickens last year, 2 Plymoth Rocks (one hen) and 4 Sussex Reds (all male ). The one hen and one of the Sussex cocks lived through the winter so I know they are survivors. I've saved a dozen eggs and started them in the incubator...
