First chick out. Got the little guy set up in a tub brooder in the living room for now, until some more brothers and sisters hatch, then they can go into the 4x4 brooder.

Our little overachiever!

Another dream come true. I've been wanting chickens for over 20 years.

Congratulations!! What a great feeling, eh?! I'd been buying books for 15 years on raising backyard chickens as a hobby before getting my first just last year.

Now, I have 13 chickens plus 12 chicks, 13 ducks plus 9 ducklings, one goose, one gosling (two sold this morning - and that was hard!

) and nine more in the bator (7 externally pipped!). Oh, the joy you'll have!

It can be expensive, it's fun, it's addictive, it's time consuming and it's definitely, definitely worth every second, every penny and every sleepless night!!!

this is my first time hatching eggs and my white silkie hen is sitting on 6standard mutts and 3 silkie crosses :) i am getting 12 more tomorrow so i need help on getting one of my other hens broody!
No gurantees here but things that some times work.
1. Stop collecting eggs. period. Somebody will get the urge.
2. Put a bunch of eggs like 10 in a favorite nest. If someone likes to lay in a dark and quiet corner or something wierd like under the steps or in a dog house this sometimes works.
3.Stay out of the coop for a couple days. Peace and quiet may trigger something.
4. Roll them dice and stick all your eggs under your one broody.

They got a chance. I had a 1yo BO hatch 18 at once, once.

Really your girls are going to do whatever they feel like.

Congrats !!!

Candled last night, silly me I was candling the eggs by holding the flashlight to the bottom of the egg... I read on here a post by Hakimi (sorry if I spelled wrong not enough coffee this morning!) to candle at the TOP end... guess what??? I saw veining for the first time so cool!!

My first ever set was eggs that were within the first 48 hours the rooster was here (he got busy right after arriving LOL) but then read that the eggs were already on their way down would not be fertilized... and so most of those 13 seem to be clear, one is a maybe (very dark easter egger and the one the rooster was mating with). I had gotten impatient and done another setting 3 days after this one of 13 more THESE EGGS have some chicks growing at least 6-8 of them look like they are developing!! EDD 4/21 for the first batch (not likely) and 4/23 for the developing batch. I managed to get a few pics on my phone to show the kids since they were obviously in bed when it was dark enough for me to candle.

My husband is hoping for a hatch success for me so I will be willing to return the borrowed rooster to Grace Jr...
I think the rooster wants to stay.

Hi All, trying to hatch my first clutch ever. I got my first chickens last year, 2 Plymoth Rocks (one hen) and 4 Sussex Reds (all male
he.gif
). The one hen and one of the Sussex cocks lived through the winter so I know they are survivors.

I've saved a dozen eggs and started them in the incubator last night. Hoping they are viable, the hen (Georgette) went broody early in the spring but something got into her nest and broke the eggs so she decided the garage would be a safer laying spot - but even with a dozen eggs and a few extra fake ones she won't sit them so I got an incubator last night and put them in it.

I did not candle them yet, I am planning to do the first check Monday.

Fingers crossed.
