Sorry to say, but does seem to be between legs, below vent. So, fatal as in I should just take her out and end her misery? And is water belly something contagious? I will look it up. . .
I think I may have a similar issue. I noticed one of the girls was lethargic this morning, and so I moved to separate her from the rest. When I picked her up I noticed she seemed very bloated, and then as I palpated her underside, fluid came out her nose and mouth. And then alot of fluid came...
Yep, that is what I did. Now the right bird is in jail and the other is out of hospital. The victim seems to be doing fine with the flock. Annabelle is in a huff. The peepers come today. Lets see where this goes.
Thanks for the ideas. The victim has been "see don't touch" now for about a week (I designed my coop for exactly that scenario). Just occurred to me that I may be isolating the wrong bird. Perhaps I should quarantine the bully, eh?
Going to order those "peepers" today. Looks like a good...
Well, meet Annabelle the bully. She went right back to her evil deeds as soon as I reintroduced the victim. So, now what? Violence for violence? Chicken stew? Heal with kindness?
Thanks for the help, folks.
Ok, no flu. That is good news. But also, no rooster. And no bully identified over the years. I will keep an eye out (eye for an eye. . .). But also failed predator attempt?
Update: This morning she is no longer standing. So, it seems there is more going on than a...
Three strange things in the past week:
Dead sparrow face down in the pond
Dead sparrow face down in the chicken watering cup
Beat up/sick chicken found in the yard
Might these be related? See the pictures for black comb and blind eye. What is going on here? Influenza? Pecking abuse? Both?
The water hose is an intriguing idea, and might be a good way to manage this in a day or so. Tonight she again will spend it outside the coop, I think (the weather is perfect). And I may make moves of engagement tomorrow. She and he were going at it across the wire yet today, but he seemed to be...
Similar scene with mine. Yesterday I have just inherited a sweet new hen (3 year old barred rock) to add to my flock of 5 + 1 Rooster, all yearlings. I put her in with the others in the fenced yard (perhaps 100 sq feet,,in the woods). The new girl was quickly attacked by the dominant hen, but...
This five month old Easter egger quite suddenly started walking on her hocks, with her left foot curled under. Overnight. She got around that way for a few days, but then her leg went straight out stiff, and she cannot walk at all. I have separated her from the flock, but now I do not know what...
