How much do chickens cost per year?

I worked it out the other day. I am at about $3.50 PER egg right now. I got the chickens in March and have gotten about 400 eggs out of the 19 hens since they started laying in the middle of July. But, it has been worth every penny.

    Dead Hen

I went to the coop this morning to let out the chickens and found a dead hen. She appeared to have an egg just inside of her vent. Her vent was a little bloodied up and enlarged. My hens started to lay about a month ago, so they are still new to it. I'm not upset, as my chickens are for food...

    Business Tax question....

So who here has information on what needs to be done to sell eggs as a business? I plan on selling the majority of the eggs from 20 hens and I would like to do it as a small business. I have heard of opening a checking account under a business name and name myself as the sole proprietor. I do...

    When will they crow?

My Silver Laced Wyandottes started crowing at 13 weeks. What it really comes down to is 'nature', she takes time and makes it her own. They will crow when they are ready. Believe me, it is like teaching a child to talk. We spend the first few years teaching them to say something, and then...

Need pic of a perfect rose comb

cybercat, thanks for all the information. I will definitely look into joining a Heritage club. It sounds like they are the 'go-to' people. I have already started culling those which have flaws, such as crooked toes, single combs etc. Again thank you, you have been a big help.

    planting for chickens

One word... THORNY CACTUSES! O.K. that's two words, but you get the point. My wife curses the chickens in one breath, because of their destructive tendencies and then talks about how funny they are in the next.

Need pic of a perfect rose comb

Thanks for the picture of the SLW. It is a big help. So would you happen to know when I could expect the full plumage to fill in? All of my birds are 4 months old. Have 4 roosters picked out that seem to be the best overall confirmation to the breed standard. However, they have not 'filled...

Need pic of a perfect rose comb

What I meant was, that I have absolutely no interest in showing my birds. However, I would like to keep my breeding line as close to the breed standard as possible. Mainly, I am going to try and refine my flock over several years. Just for kicks, and nothing more. I may invest in a few show...

Need pic of a perfect rose comb

I'm not breeding for show. I was just trying to keep my line as close to possible to what would be considered breed standard. I have 25 roosters to choose from and I'm just trying to pick the best, nothing more, nothing less. The 5-6 roosters I think are the best, all have body's which are...

Need pic of a perfect rose comb

I will be culling about 25 SLW roosters and keeping 2 for my flock continuation. Basically, I'm looking at all aspects of confirmation in the roosters to make my decision on which two to keep. I need pictures of a rose comb which is as close to show standard as possible. All help would be...

    Water Everywhere

I have two Toulouse Goslings and they have managed to get water everywhere. Their water is in a normal waterer you would use for chicks. The goslings are splashing it constantly and going through a whole gallon in less than a day. Any suggestions?

Yippee, the chickens are now outside.

I finally got the coop far enough done to move the 51 chickens outside, and not a moment too soon. My DW and I were almost at our wits end with the smell. I let them run around the 20x24 run for about a hour before I locked them up for the night. They didn't know what to do with all the room...
