I am getting back into raising chickens after all but 2 of my last flock were killed off by predators. I went to tsc today and got 4 straight run leghorns, 4 straight run reds, and 6 unkown out of the pullet bin. I want to keep around 10-12 layers with 1 rooster. I am in south Georgia so the...
well according to chicken math, chicks dont count as chickens, so you have to get 6 or 7 laying hens, then you can also raise some babies. Its addictive. I was gonna get 4 or 5, then 10, wound up with 13 and thinking about what I'm going to add next.
Im using Dumor as well, only feed I have bought so far, although second time around they were out of 50 lb bags of chick starter so had to get gamebird starter
No Trespassing signs are good, but the signs I have are "beware of dogs" and "trespassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again" imo people coming into your yard and feeding livestock are the same as dogs or any other predator, and should be treated the same way
Glad you are ok, Ive seen 3 snakes around my coop so far, only one which might grow large enough to be a problem, it was a black snake over 2 ft long. Thats the biggest snake I have seen around my house, most are just grass snakes that are around a foot or less. I saw one today that I thought I...
so my chicks are about a month old now, today I saw them sparring a little. 2 of them would look at each other then jump up once or twice while flapping thier wings. no contact, they just jump up once or twice then both turn and go back to scratching around. It was pretty cool to watch
not sure exactly but probably something like 3/8s to 1/2 in. I guess I will look around for something to put in there for them, was hoping to avoid having to clean the bedding lol.
When I move my chicks outside Im going to be putting them in a old rabbit pen we had that was a rabbit pen until I get my coop built. My question is the pen has a wire floor in it. how old would they need to be so thier feet do not get messed up by the wire. Im in South GA so temp should not be...
no temp gauge, just been watching to see if they were hot or cold, raised the heat lamp a few more times and next time im going to a smaller bulb as the 125 seems to be a little too much while they are in the house.
Yes, I've actually moved them to a bigger brooder and raised the light several times. they are spreading out more now. Also, any ideas on age? Im guessing around a week but this is my first time having chicks so dont have anything but pics on here to base it on.
