I have one red jungle fowl hen, she's 2 years old and other than a few random eggs, she only lays a nest full of eggs in the spring around May, the rest of the year she doesn't lay any eggs. I believe the red jungle fowl are more like regular birds, they lay eggs in the spring to have babies...
As others have said, chickens are tough.
I've had chickens get gashed so bad that you can see the meat under the skin (picture a chicken from the store with the skin flopping around) and by the time I find them they're already scabbed up and will heal such that you won't even know they were...
Nice looking coop, I have a similar style coop, not quite as nice as yours (yours looks to be built much better quality) but larger at 8x10. In retrospect I'm not sure I'd have gotten that style knowing what I know now.
Despite the roof overhang, I found that water would get into the nesting...
I've had similar problems, mine caused by spurs (even if they're relatively blunt) slipping off the bird on one side or the other. This is exacerbated if the hen in question doesn't want to be mated and struggles to escape.
Saddles will help and I've found that even with really bad gashes...
They might not fight, but keep an eye on them because they might object to the other mating with the hens. I had a couple that when one of them was mating a hen, the other would run over and peck both the rooster and hen on the head. A couple of times one of the roosters ran over and ran...
Luckily for George I was keeping an eye out, he'd been fighting with his brother a little earlier but I expected them to settle down as they'd done in the past but George was serious in his quest for dominance this time. He looked ok later after the fight was over but started acting odd (was...
I don't know how much he sees out of that eye, hard for me to say, just that he does see something.
When it was injured there didn't appear to be any damage to the eyeball itself, just a hole in his lower eyelid but his eye was swollen shut for quite some time.
He seems to do ok with...
At most he's half blind, he does react when I move my hand toward him from that side so I believe he does see something but how much I don't know.
When this happened I was afraid he wouldn't have a pupil, but luckily it wasn't that bad, only a hole in the lower eyelid. I can't imagine what...
A quick update if anyone is interested, he's doing fine, the only indication that anything was ever wrong is that the injured eye is paler in color than the other eye. It's no longer orange but more of a tan color.
Nugget, one of my half Wyandotte (mom) half Red Jungle Fowl (dad) chickens. I think he's around 4-5 months old. His brother is similar but with a jungle fowl comb instead of the Wyandotte rose comb.
