    Chickens roaming and egg laying

Well all, this problem solved itself, though not in a good way. Unfortunately, we had a fox attack our flock the other day. He was on a killing spree, killing two in a row and was chasing a third when I grabbed my shotgun and chased him off (I couldn't get a shot off without hitting a neighbor's...

    Chickens roaming and egg laying

Wow, neighbors! I'm in Fleetwood. We used to own a Hydroponics and Horticulture store in Boone up until this past January.

    Chickens roaming and egg laying

Well, today we're back up in eggs, so now I'm wondering what was going on. Still searched their haunts and didn't find any outside the coop. aart, we're in the mountains of North Carolina. How can you tell when they're getting ready to molt? How often does that happen?

    Chickens roaming and egg laying

SueT, they are a little over a year old now. They are still eating their layer feed, but not as much as when they were cooped up as they're pigging out on eating our yard! We actually stopped locking them in at night in the last week, as that one hen was not fun for the rest to be cooped up...

    Chickens roaming and egg laying

We recently turned our chickens loose and they have free range over our property now. They stay within a 100 yards of their coop, rummaging through the underbrush and grass. They seem healthier and happier now (especially since one of them was pecking their feathers clean when they were penned...

    Aggressive one! Help!

I'm having the same problem with a flock of eight. Seven are practically bald. I just increased their run area from 4'x3' to 10'x8'. The coop is 6'x4' with two levels of 6'-long roosts. Watching this thread for helpful info, otherwise the offending bird is ending up on the table.

    Bad Eggs?

We got a mixed bunch of 8 hen chicks in May of last year, and they're all laying quite regular now. We have no roosters. Problem is, we're seeing spots in eggs every day. These are anything from a small blood-looking spot to larger clumps. If we crack 5 eggs, we are typically tossing at...

    Tough, Brittle Egg Shells

Not really "new" to them. I grew up on a self-sufficient farm where we had plenty of chickens and eggs. My only task though was to collect them (and harvest a chicken for dinner a few times a week). I was just a kid. Sure would like to know how Eggland's Best gets those nice...

    Tough, Brittle Egg Shells

Hi. First question on the group: I have a mixed bunch of young hens. Right now, I have a Rhode Island Red and a Barred Rock hen laying. Both are producing eggs with rather tough shells with rubbery membranes. When breaking the eggs to eat, I've got to use a sharp edged bowl to break...
