Barred rock Heritage in my opinion are nicer looking, are broody and take care of chicks, and are of a more docile temperament. Production are not broody, more aggressive, but are very interesting behavior wise. Both are dual-purpose and lay plenty of eggs.
I can’t recall if it is a Plymouth Rock x RIR that maintains the color difference in chicks. Honestly within a few weeks they start sorting out by behavior and feathering in so not a big deal. Both are the same size breeds and this cross would not be bad. I have noticed inbred has a decreasing...
An Icelandic rooster just joined our flock this year. He is still a baby and we have two chicks from him. Mixed breeds :/ sorry with heritage Barred Rock hens. The chicks are FAST, hardy and can fly. The chicks show nice traits from both breeds. Icelandics are a Very interesting breed.
This original post was mine. After several hatchings, apparently my chickens like an 'auntie' hen to help with the sitting and especially raising chicks. The Auntie often stay with the chicks after Mom weans them. One would have a chick tucked under each wing at night until they were almost as...
1> We use organic feed grown and mixed locally.
2> We will put apple cider vinegar (1 tbs per gal) in plastic waterers. In the Winter when the chickens have limited space we build the litter to a foot. For litter we use bedding woodchips, wood chips from the town from taking down trees...
Does anyone in the Hudson Valley, Berkshire area have day old chicks? Heritage barred rocks preferred but will take a consider others. Needed for a broody hen.
We have heritage barred rocks and love them. 50% go broody and we keep chicks every year. Wonderful in cold climates, clean, not fussy chickens. Consistently very good egg layers. Have a hiatus period in December at molt. We live in the NE where the breed was developed and they do very well...
I just got an education this morning on co-brooding. Two hens taking care of same nest. Hopefully one of the folks that are more experienced here can chime in.
This year one hen went broody and she was limited to 12 eggs. 6 were in there for a day or two when she first appeared to quit for a day, her sister hens filled up the nest then she began sitting. After 28 days (yes 28) a sister hen who visited from time to time decided to steal her nest. Or...
