I just got 6 of these about six weeks ago. One of mine got a wing chewed off by one of my dogs when she was about a week old. But she pulled through and you can hardly tell her from the others. They'll be going outside soon (if it ever warms up here...feels like winter today and rainy.)
Help! I ordered a total of 16 chicks from Meyer. Hatched on Monday, received on Wednesday morning. I went to the PO as soon as they arrived and brought them right home. I ordered 9 Light Brahma females, 2 Light Brahma males, 4 Cuckoo Maran females, and 1 Meyer Meal Maker (which looks like maybe...
One of my 11 day old Welsummer chicks got its wing chewed off by one of our dogs three days ago. We have the chicks in a cage in our sunroom with our dogs and a cat. The animals cannot get into the cage but we had a little box sitting in the cage for the chicks to get into and apparently one of...
One of my Rhode Island Whites has developed a blackish discoloration on her comb and it is droopy. This only happened within the past couple of days. She is eating but has had a "dirty" bottom for awhile. As far as I known she is laying. She is about 2 and 1/2 years old. Any ideas?
I have the following hens: Easter Eggers, golden laced Wyandottes, white rocks, barred rocks, Dominques, Australorps, buff Orpington, and Jersey Giants. I only have Lavendar Orpington roosters. So I have all eggs mixed up from various hens (all I can differentiate between are the green eggs from...
Also as to feeding chicken meat to chickens and the risk of "mad-chicken" disease, I believe the mad cow issue was caused by feeding herbivorous animals brain matter from infected animals. Cooking though will not destroy the prions responsible for mad cow disease. I wouldn't think this would be...
This evening, my husband found one of my Lavender Orpinton hens dead in the coop beside the water container with an egg sticking partly in, partly out. He said it looked normal sized and could not see any indication of any injuries. Since I have several chickens (hens and three roosters) of...
One of my Lavender hens was dead this evening, with an egg partially extruded. No sign of any other issues before my husband found her dead. Could this have anything to do with the huge egg from two days ago (don't know it was from the Lavender though), the blood-streaked egg from yesterday, and...
No, they are not new hens. I've raised them from chicks from this past spring and summer. Most have been laying now for at least three-four months so they are about eight months old. We are getting pretty large eggs most days, although since I have several breeds, it is hard to know which hens...
One of our chickens laid a huge egg yesterday. I am attaching pictures below. I originally thought it might be one of my Jersey Giants but this evening one of my Golden Laced Wyandottes had some blood on her rump and there was a smaller egg with blood streaked on it. This is honestly the biggest...
Yes, I plan on keeping them. The guy who sold them to me about seven weeks ago told me they were ten or eleven weeks old at the time. So they are about seventeen or eighteen weeks old (estimated). Two of them fly up in the air sometimes against one another- I don't know if this might be an early...
BTW, how can you tell they are cockerels and not pullets? Not questioning your opinion because I an new to this and have no clue whatsoever. Just curious how you can tell the difference.
