Even tho I am in Central Florida - I still feel sorry for the birds to put their belly on a cold floor !!!
I only have two nest boxes now as two hens just hatched a dozed babies each this week.
The bigger boys n girls roost on their perches at night.
Next week, I will put the small size heating...
I have some very pretty roosters of the Golden Phoenix variety and they just
lost their 18" beautiful tail feathers
What feed would help them through this rough time with a speedy recovery ??
I have been supplementing their Free Range diet with a 3 grain corn mix.
Should I switch to no corn and...
Pleasant surprise today. Found this little chicken egg the size of a quail egg.
I don't know which hen layed it. But this is the parentage - - -
Hens: rhode island red & rhodebar
Rooster: Golden Phoenix (mates with everything that walks on two feet)
then, 3 smaller hens about 3 months old...
Athena, try to scam you up some Golden Pheonix (bantam) eggs for hatching.
If you can keep them away from the predators, they are really beautiful yard birds.
These are my new babies - 3 out of 8 hatched on day 21, (one died from mom standing on it)
5 eggs are still in the nest at day 24 now and...
have you ever grilled quail before ?
for me, the only way I can handle quail or dove is fried like chicken.
Most people don't have the aptitude or patience to hand pick feathers off a
flock of small birds and just just do a quick pull and separate the breast and
discard the rest.
This leaves...
I would wait for at least two weeks old.
at just a few days, their little digestive system is still delicate.

This is part of their broody instinct in the wild - - - -
hatch the eggs then show the young how to fend for themselves.
My broody hen really tore up the 10' x 30' run so bad that I turned them
ALL out to free range at the edge of our woods and grassy yard.
She can really...
hahha Like Bill Cosby said to his kids on one of his TV shows .......
I made you
I can take you out !!
and I can make more just like you !!!!
THAT is what we should whisper into the ears of the TROUBLEMAKERS !!!
Mix up this Southern Recipe - - - - -

garlic powder
onion powder
thyme
rosemary (double parts)
powdered butter
lemon peel zest
kosher salt
fresh cracked black pepper

mix in with their regular feed for one week prior to harvesting.
that way, they will...
From what my Feed Store told me, it takes a month for the "medicated feed" to
cycle through the bird.
so, one month AFTER you switch to NON-Medicated feed, then you can eat the bird
or the eggs with no problem to the human system.
If you have chickens that are laying eggs now, you should have...
feed them Medicated Chick Starter feed until they are 4 months old.
Then, switch to Layer - Non Medicated feed
There are several brands available at your local feed store.
If you are " City Bound ", you can buy it on E-Bay, Amazon, or other on-line stores.
Crumbles - not Pellets !!!
yes, the red variety are more aggressive by nature.
follow the rule - " Birds of the same feather - Flock together ".
I tried the white, brown, jumbo coturnix, bobwhites and putting them
in the same pen was a horrible mistake. (all hatched out at the same time)
first, the whites were bullied...
And me too ..... lost one chick every couple of days ....
and just now, I checked, had 5 (out of 9) baby chicks in the free range coop....
then one hour later ... ONE WAS GONE !!!
I have RIR and Rhodebar hens that are almost one year old and BIG girls.
so, now I will take the remainder 5 and...
I have seen so many articles on this subject........ pros and cons ....
I personally have hatched dozens of mail order chicken and quail eggs in the incubator
with good to mediocre results. Paying very close attention to temperature, humidity,
air flow, 3 day lockdown, yada yada yada ...
