We have a young hen that has developed swelling under the eye and it seems to be filling up even bigger.. None of the other chickens are sick. We have seperated her... I dont know what else to do. .
Yesterdays high was around 12 and we had 12 eggs laid today!!! it's our best collection day so far this winter in ohio. We have about 18 layers. Many gray girls, a few blacks and 2 Americanas (momma hen and daughter hen)
I agree with everyone, don't offer free eggs. My older neighbor luckily enjoys listening to the roosters and has told me. Stand your ground, it's your property and you can do with it what you want. I know it's hard, but stay strong!!
We had some roos that were over a year old that we butchered. I cooked 2 in the pressure cooker and they fell off the bone! delicious! (I think you need to cook them at around 15 lbs pressure for about a half hour)
my best guess. .
#1 good
#2 is not fertile
#3 dead (it looks more like a blood ring to me than a vein)
#4 good
#5 good
*the black dots are a good sign, they should kind of 'swim' around inside the egg.
*you should be able to tell the difference between blood rings and veins. . veins...
Hello, my name is Jessica, I too, am a incubator addict. I religiously have enough eggs ready by hatch day to instantly put a whole new batch in right after I clean the incubator. We are on our 5th batch already this year. . . I have tried to talk my husband into getting a commercial size...
I hope your newly hatched chick is doing better. . it's definitely very stressful hatching chicks but it's worth it in the end knowing you have had them from their hatching day. =) and just a word of advice, I too get anxious when the chicks pip, but after my last batch I don't think I'm...
Our hens like to lay their eggs in the same nest box, so whenever our one hen gets broody she just sits on all of them. For our large hen she will hatch about 14 chicks. =)
We keep ours at 'basement' temperature. About 65 degrees, maybe a little cooler at times. We make a rule of it to turn the eggs 4 times a day and only 'store' them for about 3 days before they go in the incubator. . anything past 3 seems to drastically drop our hatch rate. .
Happy Hatching!
First of all, I would like to say all our chickens are locked up in cages/ fences when we aren't home. This morning my husband woke to find all our 3 month old chicks in the yard, 6 were alive but 3 were missing. He saw blood and feathers everywhere and it was pretty obvious what happened...
